COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A complex beer, with layers of flavors unfolding as this beer slides down your throat. Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor. Today only a handful of brewers produce beer reminiscent of those of the past. We use imported German smoked malt to add depth and complexity to our Smoked Porter. Sensory Profile: Aromas of smoked wood, licorice, and dark fruit. The flavor is a balance of smokiness, roasted malt, coffee, and malty sweetness.

Food Pairing: A natural match for any smoked or grilled meats. The smoky flavor of the meat and the unique smoky flavor of the beer blend beautifully to elevate the enjoyment of them both.

Pretty interesting. I’m certainly no smoked guy, and I usually like my porters and stouts pretty roasted, but the complimentary sweet/chocolate malts and the relatively subtle smoked flavor works well. Much more palatable than the SN smoked porter.

From May 2008 I got a filled 22oz bottle in a trade with nutbrown. Thanks Alan! Nice dark brown pour with a 1 finger head of tannish foam. Lots of lacing here and good head retention until about 3/4s of the way through my glassful. I smell some roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee, and a touch of smoke. Overall, a sweetish smell. Yum. A very nice taste. First thing I notice is a flavourful coffee that expands into some chocolate, roasted malt, a good smokiness, some sweet malt that offsets the coffee bitterness nicely...again, yum. Nice medium mouthfeel and the light carbonation works very well. I'm especially fond of the coffee bitterness finish that lingers on for some time. This is a very good Smoked Porter indeed and when they are done right, they're one of my favourite styles. Drinkability is right up there as I find myself taking sip after sip and the contents of the bottle are disappearing far too rapidly. A big thanks again go out to nutbrown for letting me sample yet another fine Captain Lawrence brew!

500ml bottle from Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York. Deep mahogany in colour with a large and long lasting tan head, good retention, good lacing. The aroma is peaty, some smoke, light chocolate, roasted malts. The flavour is smoky upfront, some roast, a bit of sweet chocolate, light spice. Clean mouthfeel, medium/light body, moderate carbonation. Finishes average length, smoky. A nicely balance not over the top smoked beer.

Dark black. Never ending thick head. Yep. this tastes like smoke...starts a little sweet then becomes charred after sitting on palate. Thanks Jow.

Bottle from Oliver’s in Albany. Pours out jet black with a huge and frothy deep tan head. Very thick. Mildly smoky and roasty aromas. Flavor is deep and roasty with layers of smoke and sweet malts. Very well balanced. Good bitterness in the middle. Long roasty finish.

Pours a thin head on a black body. The aroma is mild smoke and roasted malt. The taste is mostly roasted malt with mild smoke and touch of burnt wood. The texture is fizzy with moderate carbonation. It’s nice without an overpowering smoke flavor.

Bottle... Pours dark brown with a mid-sized, creamy, light khaki head. Good retention. The aroma is a luxuriant swirl of brownie brittle, melted fudge and campfire smoke. Medium-bodied with prickly carbonation. The flavor offers dark chocolate, charred wood and campfire smokiness. Short, crisp, singed finish.

Murky brown black color with oily head. Aroma is smoked meat, and grains maybe some raisin. Taste is really oddly meaty in the smoke which i dont dig. Decent at best.
