Black pour, humongous almond head. Burnt malt aroma. Taste is chocolate malts, roasted malts, a touch of coffee, and a bitter sweet sugary mollasses taste. There is a little chalkiness in there that kinda kills, nothing outstanding but nothing bad. JasonG (776) - Salt Lake City, Utah, USA - JUL 27, 2007
0.5L bottle - Pours a relatively opaque black color with smallish light tan head that sticks around for a while. Aroma of toasted malts, bit of vanilla, black cherry, dates. Flavor has chewy malts, notes of caramel and toasted oats, slight roasty hint, with a balanced but slightly sweet finish. Just alright overall. Best before April 2010, drank in April 2002, 16.9 OZ bottle: Perhaps I should get another bottle and cellar it for a few years. It tastes watery and the aftertaste is too sweet. DaSilky1 (2606) - San Diego, California, USA - NOV 21, 2002

Coffee nose with roastedness and some cocoa sweetness..
starts good for a second or two of nice creamy sweet coffee but suddenly chooses to show some vegital pooeyness...the vegital notes subside in the finish where the flavor goes back to a more pleasant coffee creaminess with a tad of metalicness...As Jim Carrey says in 'liar liar', I've had better
Not bad. It has a coffee and malt flavor with a bitter after taste. Next bottle I'll cellar for a while.

Dark brown almost black color with a medium thick head. The aroma is slightly sweet yet spicy and meaty, something like pepperoni(?). The flavor is slightly spicy and malty with coffee undertones and slightly hoppy finish. BeerLimey (2154) - California, USA - JUL 15, 2003
2001: Roasted coffee, raw bread and funky grain aroma. Very sweet raisin/prune fruitiness on the palate, a little pastey towards the end. Too sweet at first but actually finishes nicely with a roasted coffee bitterness. Probably needs time to temper the sweetness and soy flavors. Pours and looks nice. A bit watery with a faint finish. A Fuller's London Porter mixed half and half with water would still be better than this. 3fourths (9351) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAR 29, 2004
UPDATED: APR 6, 2004 Deep brown with red. Smoky malt caramel and wheat aroma. Smells "old" like many imports do... I guess it's been on the shelf a bit. Moderate thickness, dull smoke and tobacco flavors with some old coffee and grains. Not doing much for me. Sven (229) - Lancaster, California, USA - SEP 24, 2004
Bottle 2001 Robust Porter, rich and malty, slightly smokey. Strong taste and smell of alcohol. I think many of the complexities of this beer have mellowed with age leaving this beer quite quaffable but not top-notch. Slightly astringent.
