3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tart fruit, toast, and spice aroma, a little like apple pie. Starts out sharply sour and fruity, more appley notes, lots of holiday-ish spiciness, finishes with more nutty, roasty, and malty flavors
Consumed at Uber. Translucent brown body. The beer doesn’t have a head. There is a nice sour fruity aroma coming from this. Subtle sour apple. Not many nuances in the aroma, and, oh shit, I’m picking up on a little diacetyl aroma. Fuck, the flavor is sour apple and butter. Bleh. Something is wrong here, and if there isn’t, I’m just not a fan of this one. At first, I get this sharp tart fruity flavor, and then it’s all sour butter. The beer has a nice crisp and bubbly texture. There is nothing good about this one. This is my first bad experience with a Cascade sour. Again, I don’t know if the base beer is this bad, but adding sour bugs to it didn’t help. boFNjackson (4230) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 30, 2010
Poured from a wooden, cask barrel @ their Barrel House... A darkish pour, deep, dark brown to near black with a thin, beige/off-white head. Lots to roasted malts, spiced and lactic yeast tones, cocoa, oak, whiskey, and candied sugars with a slightly souring finish that endorsed fruit and malt sweetness. Tap Live from the Barrel @ Cascade Barrel House: Pours a dark muddy brown color with a light head. The nose is lively with fresh oak and yeast, fresh pressed apple cider and a light malty backbone. The flavor is very creamy, not too tart, but sour enough to bring the fruit notes forward and push the maltiness towards the back. Very earthy and bright with a toasty mouthfeel. Nice.
