Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, theyre known as Firkins). Its a skill that would work as crowd control when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

Roast coffee greets the nose, some dark chocolate too, dark brown, pours a small cappuccino head. Full taste of coffee, dark chocolate with some treacle. Medium bodied, pleasantly bitter. Good. Thanks to Michael Robis at Chesters.

It was starting to rain toward the end of Hobart pubcrawl, so we ducked into a piano bar of all places and had a couple of these. Reallly dark brown, oily pour with a foamy brown head that eases into a chunky layer. Mostly coffee and bitter chocolate on the nose. Flavours of coffee, chocolate and some anise. Well balanced with mild bitterness. Silky mouthfeel. Very enjoyable.

Dark brown with a tan head. Good roasty malt nose with the addition of coffe and a little charred character to palate. Definitely bitter. Very nice.

Maybe it was because I had been surrounded by boring oz beers for a few weeks but this beer was great. Nice dark appearance and a very thick pallet. the flavor was of dark malts and coffee. I want to try this beer again and see if it as good as I remembered it.

375 ml bottle - Opaque black with a browny beige head. Low to medium carbonation. Full bodied an smooth with sweet roasted malt, caramel and maybe a bit of the black chocolate/coffee, No bitterness to speak of although not overly sweet either. Quite enjoyable.

375 ml bottle - Pours thick and black with a mostly lasting frothy brown head. Low to medium carbonation. Rich heavily roasted malt with with coffee and a just a touch of licorice. A bit of alcohol in the finish. Only a very mild bitterness but neither is it overly sweet. Far from perfect but quite enjoyable.

Tasted 31/05/2007. 330ml bottle, with the tasting group, at Brendons. Nose of sweet roast coffee, slightly grain and a wee touch of cardboard. Smooth roastiness in the mouth, nice sweet underbelly, just a ltouch of hops (probably well below style here). Roast barley give that edge that almost hints at sourness. Perhaps a shade tired but undoubtedly still a very nice beer. Nice Australian-style export stout. A little cleaner, simpler, softer in the roast depeartment, and lower in alcohol, than a classic FES but very very drinkable.

Tasted 21/08/2005. 375ml bottle. Dark brown, near black, with a beautiful dark tan head that, unfortunately, disappears before I get a real chance to appreciate it. There goes a mark or two. Now it just looks like coke. Light caramelly perfumed nose and fizziness is also reminiscent of that old gut rotter. A bit of chocolate just picks it up a little. Big caramel and chocolate malt sweetness up front is followed by a strong roasty malt dryness and just a touch of hop bitterness. A bit lightweight and fizzy - its drinkable but theres plenty of better stouts about these days. Drop the fizz and Im sure it would be a whole lot better.

Bottle. Black body with a medium-sized mocha-brown head. The aroma is nutty and has notes of toffee, caramel, and grass. Tastes a bit of sour malt and hefty chocolate thickness. Spritzy and bitter in the finish.

As a stout fan this is definitely one for fellow admirers. Maybe a little too heavy to drink all night but thats what I look for in a good stout, its a great starter. Pours and sits very nicely in the glass and has a flavour that lingers nicely. If you dig a smooth yet mildly sweet stout this will satisfy.

Muddy appearance, muddy texture, mud & metho taste. Cheap instant coffee aromas. No, really, it was pretty unenjoyable for mine, and that was after id had a couple. Worst Aussie stout ive tasted.
