Fatty Appleton, a colourful brewery worker, was known for his ability to carry 2 Firkin barrels under his arms (yes, they’re known as Firkins). It’s a skill that would work as ’crowd control’ when things got out of hand at the local. Deep and rich in colour, Stout has a slightly nutty roasted flavour and chocolate characteristics, with a smooth and creamy body and pleasantly bitter after-taste. Fatty Appleton would approve!

From a bottle. A classic example of the style, roasty and smooth, I’d almost forgotten just good it is.

Tasted as Export Stout, Hobart. Poured an opague jet black with no edge tint and. a 5mm light tan foamy head that diminished quickly. Carbonation very low, slow and fine. Amroma of roasted grain and sweet dark chocolate. Taste was of moderatley strong roasted grain followed by coffee bitterness, dark chocolate sweetness and hints of dark fruits. Medium body with a thin mouthfeel. Smooth with a moderatley strong coffee bitterness and lingering finish.

On tap at Cascade. Poured a jet black with a thin, short-lived tan head. Tasted very bitter after a sweet cider. But was moreish, with interesting flavours of chocolate and dark fruit. Thin. Nice flavours, though; would have again.

Cola coloured with a medium tan head. Cocoa and coffee aromas, a little bit of leather. Dark chocolate, coffee and molasses flavours - better than I expected to be honest. Medium to thick body, creamy mouthfeel. Not bad.

A little thin, but a solid stout, very chocolaty. An example of the style, with no fuss.

5.8%ABV. Stout. Tapped out a rich obsidian. 40°SRM Nose had some nice smoke and coffee aromas. Darkly malt and roasty aromas. Mouthfeel was sudsy. Palate was flavors of coffee, peat smoke and the sweet camelization of ’Vietnamese coffee. Nice nutty flavor or pecans and walnuts. Other prominent flavors were that of bamboo charcoal, dark fruits, darkly browned wheat toast, chocolate. Finish was clean charcoal with a pleasant ume dryness. Goes on Favorites List!

330ml bottle into a washington glass. Full-bodied, strong roasted character, with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste. Dark with medium head.

Very mild for a foreign stout. Flavours of roasted malt, nutty, a little chocolate sweetness, but all quite thin and fleeting. Nothing dominates the palate and the aroma is quite subdued.
