Big and friendly, our Brown Ale is as approachable as its inspiration—Cedric, George Vanderbilt’s beloved St. Bernard. Our deep russet-colored beer offers hints of caramel and roasted barley, with a nutty flavor produced by Victory™ malt. The crisp finish is marked by well-balanced hops.

Bottle. Aroma of warm bread and roasted pecans. Very well balanced... malts of toast and caramel, hops are not overly bitter. Nice example of a good brown ale. Would be glad to get this in my area from time to time.

Color is dark bourbon. Aroma is malty but not too strong. Taste is malty and smooth. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth. Aftertaste does not longer. Good balanced. Better than their pale. *4 oz pour in flight at Biltmore. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Biltmore tavern (5/19/15). Mild malt nose with a bit of caramel, light neutral fruit and some herbal hops. Moderate coppery brown clear with thin head. Medium body with medium carbonation. Lightly flavored brown ale, with light caramel and sweetish malt notes. Mild nutty character and a bit of hop bitterness. Carbonic tang with nutty finish and after.

No nose to speak of. Smooth taste and decent malty sweetness but pretty bland overall. I drain poured the last part of the glass. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft sample at Cedric’s Taven at the Biltmore near Asheville, NC; clear darker brown color with off-white head. Aroma notes of roasted malt, caramel, toast and some nuttiness. Taste adds some more nutty sweetness with some earthy bitterness. Light-medium body, moderate-low carbonation, creamy with light sweet roast finish. Pretty solid brown ale, enjoyed.

Location: Draft at the Biltmore, 1/1/15, My 100th Brown Ale Rating!

Aroma: The nose is light, sweet malts, toast, some caramel, and some nutty notes
Appearance: Pours a mostly clear brown color with a decent sized head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is clean and a little sweet, malty, with a good balance from the light bitterness
Palate: It drinks very nicely, with a clean and smooth mouthfeel, and a nice finish
Overall Impression: Pretty nice example of an English style brown. It isn’t an out of this world beer, just a clean, drinkable, enjoyable one. There’s always a place for that.

Thanks to Marshall Hutcheson for bringing this back from North Carolina --- Clear amber brown color with a 1" rocky beige head and a broken curtain of lace. Aroma of caramel malt - quite appealing. Taste is clear malt with just a bit of caramel that grows as it enters the palate, showing molasses and a bit of hazelnut. On the swallow, light bittering enters, keeping everything properly aligned. On one hand, a simple brew. On the other, an outstanding Brown Ale that I’d be willing to drink every day.

Draft pour at the Biltmore at Cedrics. Brown with white foamy head - like a guiness head. Slight nutty aroma. Taste is a sweet smooth carmel spicy and mildly nutty. I like this.

On tap at Cedric’s Tavern at the Biltmore Estate, brewed by Highland. Clear nut brown pour. Sickly sweet caramel malt, some toffee and chocolate, with decent centennial type hops to balance the finish. Not bad.
