COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The namesake beer of COTU’s founders, Ray Ray’s Pale Ale starts with imported English 2-row barley that provides a full rich flavor. Near continuous additions of Cascade hops contribute both a balanced bitterness and classic spicy and citrusy aromas and flavors. This extremely drinkable un-filtered American-style pale ale checks in at 5.2% ABV and 42 IBUs.

Crisp light amber and copper coloured body with a thin just off-white head. Aroma of bright grapefruit and herbal hops with a little malt note and some hints of apricot as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive hops up front make for a very nice beer and the malt shows well along with a touch of caramel and very light sweetness. Aftertaste has a good balance of hops (a decent amount) and malt and a subdued apricot sweetness. Overall, a surprisingly nice APA with a good balance and a smooth, yet sweet finish. I sampled this 12 ounce can purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia and sampled a few hours later after a hockey game on 19-May-2014 - thanks Kevin!

Poured from a Draft. Unremarkable aroma, but nice orange yellow color and good lacing. Typical grapefruit flavor but not bitter. Refreshing choice.

Ray Ray’s Pale Ale is a crips, clean hop driven pale ale sporting what would seem to be more than 42 IBU’s. Hop expression tends towards grapefruit and orange peel but bitterness with some malt expression which is more evident at lower ABV. Bitterness is pronounced and overshadows flavor a bit.

Keg @ COTU. The pour’s light amber with a small head. The nose is really fruity, bright. Plenty of pear, nectarine, peach fruit salad. Brash tropical undergrowth. The taste is reminiscent of fruit loops - pretty sweet, fruiy. More tropical fruits, pineapple, cantaloupe. Moderate bitterness on the finish. Medium body, average carbonation. Pretty solid stuff.

12 oz. can from RABinVA- thanks again, Ryan! Pours a hazy apricot color with a huge fizzy head that takes a couple minutes to dissipate down to a small cap. Aroma of mellow but nice orange and tangerine citrus, caramel and pale malts, soap, and some spice. The flavor loses a lot of the nose’s charm, though- a short burst of citrus and malts washes out with a soapy, bitter, mineral finish. Light-bodied, with a dry mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Disappointing after showing some promise.

Can at RBSG. From notes. Slightly bitter and quite fruity. Peaches and apricots but not citrus. Good but not great. Seems like these guys are still dialing it in but I’m excited to see how they do in the future.

Can from total wine Richmond. Pours golden with a couple of inches of thick white head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. not getting much on the nose. A tad bitter on the tongue without any of the hop flavor that makes it all worth it.

Tap @ brewery shared with HopTsing. Was wanting the PocaHOPtas but they were kicked. Was pleasantly surprised with this. Hoppier than I expected with all the good things I like. Just a touch grainy. Gets extra points for me liking it more than I thought I would.
