Spicy funky aroma, with some hoppiness. Pours cloudy golden amber with a thick white head. Very spicy upfront, clove, cinnamon, allspice, then it turns funky sour, like brettomyces, maybe this bottle is infected? Has a dry bitter finish. Not what i was expecting. Interesting to try, won’t try it again.

July 29th, 2014 - As I stood at the counter at Central Coast Brewing, an excited young man came up and straddled the seat to my left. As I waited, he eagerly ordered several bottles of the Chai Ale to go, and as I looked around, it seemed to my slightly tipsy eye that the Cream Ale’s logo and color scheme was the plurality eye-candy in the brewpub. This, then, appeared to be Central Coast’s poster brew, and I was excited to see why. A veritable sachet of spices lies in the aroma: clove, all-spice, cinnamon, brown sugar, and everything that makes chai chai. It smells intensely of chai, and could easily be mistaken for any other kind of chai themed beverage. As for the taste, the chai tastes are subtler. The blonde ale base takes the beginning, and then the chai swells up slowly until it dominates the aftertaste. The brew is spicy, and on a thinnish palate, it has a refreshing effect, but the tastes are...strange. I like chai, and I like beer, but while the two together are novel, it’s not something I’d be champing at the bit to get a second serving of. Bottle from backlog. Pours clear amber with a small fizzy off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly leaving some residual and lacing. Aroma is grain, spices, cinnamon, clove. Pours a clear deep golden color with nearly no head at all. A white ring forms and clings to the edge of the glass where it joins with the beer. A very faint aroma of tart pear emerges from the glass. Mouthfeel is wet and smooth, yielding to some carbonation scrub, and finishing a little powdery. Very mild, blended flavors. Draft @ the brewery. Pours a pale yellow color with a small white head. Has a fruity spicy aroma. Fruity malty spicy creamy flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy creamy finish.

Clear golden pour with a white head. Slight tartness up front, but otherwise nice spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Some bready sweetness, water, and a grassy undertone. Bomber poured into a pint glass. Gold with a heart of orange and a fizzy cola-like off-white head. Aroma is sweet with obvious chai spices, vanilla, hay, candied citrus. Flavor is sweet as well, with a round honey malt base and a restrained chai spiciness that surprisingly doesn’t become overwhelming. At first the beer is on the cloying side but with a little warmth, some mild tea tannins come out and dry the palate without being too astringent. Bottle from Henry’s: Poured a sparkling golden liquid and had a fizzy short lived formation of foam. As for the aroma, I can definitely pick up on the scents of cream, green herbs, spices, and perhaps a light background of tea. The flavor is just as rewarding as the nose led me to believe because of the touches of herbs, tea, and spicing as well as a delicate usage of cream flavoring. Certainly creative and different cream recipe than made for an interesting drink since I usually don’t fancy cream ales unless their really dark in complexion. Draught at the brewery. A beer clothed in controversy, and possibly rightly so. Takes more of a sweet chai line than spicy, though the spice is there in a rounder, sweeter way, like a starbucks chai with plenty of sugar. But I like starbucks chai; much better than their coffee. Basic blond/cream ale base with light hops but a little more malt sweetness to carry the tea. Nice stuff.
