12oz bottle from Capone’s, Norristown. 2011 vintage. It’s been so long since I’ve had a BA barleywine that I was reminded with this beer of how damn tasty the style can be. Big amber-brown pour with an appealing glow to it and a healthy, silky carbonation. Nose was very strong, with sherry, wood, vanilla, and related flavors coming across just as powerfully as the bourbon itself. Good English-style beer at the base, plenty malty with nightcap and candy elements abounding. With the additions of the barrel and the booze, it really works quite nicely. Very good.

Sweet but the bourbon notes and a fair amount of hops rescue this. More of an American Strong Ale in my book, whatever that means. Hazy, auburn color not much for lacing. Palate and taste has some complexity, finish has some burn, nose is basically caramel.

Molasses, dark, toasted malts, sweet bread and caramel, burnt caramel. Clear, dark gold, small, creamy, off-white head. Medium to heavy sweet. Sweet molasses, grain and bread malts, toasted flavours, bitters, quite harsh bitterness coming up, soft carbonation, full bodied. Decent Barley Wine, yet some harsh bitterness in palate. Keg at Sugar Maple, Milwaukee.

Pours reddish brown with a dense beige head. The aroma has rich caramel, vanilla, oak, rich toasty malt and an English slant to it. It has a fairly thick body with soft carbonation. The taste has drier malt, dates, caramel, alcohol warmth, oak and woodiness. The finish has pleasing warmth. Nicely made.

Bottle in Seattle. Thanks Chris! A bit lighter than the original, that we’re tasting side by side. Mild sweet aroma. Rich, alcohol body. Sweet, round bourbon. Rich hot body. Tasty, but a bit more anonymous than the non-BA version. Nice.
