The finest bourbon barrel stout I’ve ever tried. I’ve had many from all over the United States and this one ranks the best.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in fall 2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a small dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather/tobacco, and oak/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. A bit of booziness as it warms, but nothing significant. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather, and oak/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate roasted bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, bourbon, vanilla, toasted oak, coconut, light coffee/leather/tobacco, and oak/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roasted bitterness/oak spice as well. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warmth lingering after the finish; with minimal booziness. Overall this is an outstanding BBA stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. This was very unique for a stout; as it seemed to have a lot of characteristics related to barleywines, but still remained roasty enough to feel like a stout. A highly enjoyable offering.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 Vintage Bottle
Deep dark brown coloured body with a touch of brown colour that isn’t opaque at the edges, along with a very thin, just oily top of deep brown. Aroma of bourbon, alcohol, oak, vanilla, raisins, cognac, whiskey and much more alcohol - super pungent. Medium-bodied; Ridiculously pungent bourbon and oak flavours with a lot of alcohol flavours along with some anise, cognac, roasted malt, light coffee and even a hint of the soy sauce. Aftertaste shows the nice complexities of the bourbon, with a ton of alcohol warmth throughout along with caramelised sugars and a dose of pit fruits. Overall, a good beer (tastes more of a porter) that’s been aged in fresh (or for a very long time) bourbon barrels; Great to try, and perhaps a bit more polished after long times, but this is still a tad harsh after a year of aging. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle (Vintage 2013), purchased from Good Beer in New York (East Village), New York on 25-April-2014 for US$5,49 sampled at home in Washington to celebrate both beer #5300 and the welcoming of the Blizzard of 2016 on 22-January-2016.

3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, 2014 vintage. Pours an opaque black body with a light brown head. The aroma is rather boozy and almost all bourbon—oak, vanilla, and coconut—with some sugars. The taste is similar, although there is some roasted malts, cocoa, and licorice. The aroma is much more intense than the taste, and unfortunately, the body is rather thin for an imperial stout.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Y black with khaki head. Long lasting head, bourbon and coffee aroma. Coffee taste and some caramel. Very smooth especially considering bourbon barreled beers can be big alcohol distractions.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 oz bottle. This is a good but unexceptional BA stout. The bourbon dominates. Very good beer and props to Central Waters for making an affordable no BS (wax cap, "special release", sky-high pricing) barrel aged beer.

3.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Very nearly a perfect barrel aged stout! I would pull out all stops and rate as high as I could go but for the thin viscosity...delicious in every other way.
