This does better as it warms. The barleywine - 2011 batch so aged a year - has a lot of alc in the smell and at the back of the taste. But otherwise it has burnt caramel and figs/dates. A medium to light body, it’s dark in the center to nearly clear on the outside. True to style barleywine that probably is a great candidate for aging. If barleywines are your thing, this is an excellent option at the price point, and something that could compete with Bigfoot. That said, for me there was a tannic onion type of thing going on in the finish that just didn’t sit right. So... quality, but the taste was just a little off.
On tap at Champps in Brookfield. Tannish brown pour, very muddy. Fruit & toffee nose, very nice for style. A touch of alcohol. Some simple sugar especially in the nose. Brown sugar. Light nut. Pours somewhat hazy mahogany with a fairly thick light tan head. Aroma features sweet caramel and toasted malt notes. Flavor features woody, caramel and toasted malt character, while some hoppy/woody bitterness rears its head. Mouthfeel delivers thin body and so-so fizz. A dense light tan head over a dark mahogany body. A big sweet nose with toffee, booze, dark berries and hops. If you like big sweet and fruity BWs, this one is for you. Dark molasses, crème brule, prunes, dark berries and fruity hops. A touch of oak and vanilla fill out the taste profile. A rich, creamy mouth feel. Bottle in Seattle. Thanks Chris! Rich, clear copper-amber. Small creamy yellow. Rich, touch of vanilla, some alc bite. Smooth, quite tasty. Bitter chocolate. Cherry skin. Very tasty.

2012 bottle I’ve been meaning to drink forever, and tonight is the night. Lovely clear red / light brown pour. Khaki head, okay retention (turns to a ring after a bit). This smells fucking great. Loads of caramel, some vanilla, surprisingly little oxidation. Sweet and silky, caramel lingers forever. Full body. Overall: this is fantastic. One of the best aged beers I’ve had in a long time. Taste is biscuit, bread, booze, toffee, caramel, and some mild brown sugars. Booze finish. medium light body for a bwine. Medium carb. Hoppy bitter finish and booze. Aroma of fruits and caramel. Appearance is black with a towering brown bottom. Taste is the same with some light sourness and bitterness to help counterbalance. Light bitterness at the end.
