2013 vintage..12 oz bottle pour..medium black color with a 1/2 finger mocha cream tan head that stays around..more carbonation than expected...nose is pretty goood with quality vanilla, charred wood..bitter chocolate...slight coffee...medium bodied taste profile yet a bit thinnner than expected after the hype on this and the nose..doesn’t seem to be infected from the nose or the taste so pleased with that..coffee does come through more on taste profile with some cinnamon/clove essence..cream and cold press coffee come through as well to produce a decent coffee stout..don’t get much of the barrel action from the taste, except maybe an initial hit of charred wood/vanilla..decent offering that seemed to have cellared ok, overall though I was expecting this to have more depth and complexity on the mouthfeel which seemed to be lacking... koleminer20 (4261) - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA - FEB 12, 2016
From notes. 4-5 ish oz pour on draft at FoBAB on November 21. The pour is a lighter black, almost dark dark brown with a thin top of frothy light tan head and a decent amount of lace as it falls. The aroma is incredibly heavy on the coffee. There is a hint of some chocolate and a light maltiness, but the coffee is really the dominating presence. A little bourbon on the back end kind of makes this seem like it’ll be a cup of coffee mixed with bourbon. Not bad, but very one-dimensional. The flavor is in that same dimension. Holy coffee! There is a little roasted malt and a hint of chocolate before the coffee just leads out to the light bourbon hint on the finish. The mouth feel is a little light. It’s thin, for sure. Like a heavy cup of coffee. The carbonation is good, but it’s just lacking the viscosity. The aftertaste is a bitter, boozy coffee with a little trailing chocolate on the end. Came across a 2011 bottle of this. Poured with a small, short lived, fizzy head, no lace. Aroma is coffee, whiskey, black malt, tang. Flavor’s very similar to nose with coffee surprisingly standing out as being still fresh tasting, strong tang as well as whiskey. Body seems a little thin. Pretty much the last pour before the keg kicked at The Sanctuary. Black appearance with a fluffy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark malts, espresso, roast, oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee and just a touch of bourbon. Similar flavor, complex, rich and moderately sweet with a light earthy bitterness. Bottle. Pours dark black, medium brown head, some lacing. Aroma is a wonderful blend of mocha and bourbon, vanilla, and oak. Lively brown head on top of a deep dark brown to black colored beer.
Aromas of wood, some some bourbon, roast, coffee, vinous notes, wet wood, light bay leaf, light coal, light ash, some prunes and fruity wood.
Flavours of bitters, coffee, spice, some berries, bourbon/whiskey note, wood, raisin, some toast but more roast, light tart, some berries, some malt roast and sweet coal.
Aftertaste is coffee, bitter, faint whiskey and wood note, light tart, some roast and berries.
Low carbo, creamy to watery mouthfeel, medium to fuller bodied and a light watery tart texture.
Difficult beer, probably has a slight infection, as the tart and berry tones are slightly present. Decent beer.
