ThaiBev stopped production of Archa, Chang Beer, Chang Draught, and Chang Export in 2015. A new product, Chang Classic, was launched, with production shared between ThaiBev’s three breweries. The recipe was changed to include rice, previously only used in the domestic 6.4% version. It is sold as 5.5% abv in some markets.
"With its attractive taste and a price that appealed to consumers at all levels, the response and success of Chang marked a new era and turned a new page for the Thai beer industry. In 1998 Beer Chang was awarded the “Gold Medallion” at the International Beer Competition in Australia in the category of “Lager, Unlimited Degree”.

GTAEgeek's rating

   AROMA 5/10   APPEARANCE 2/5   TASTE 4/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 13/20

330 mL bottle. Pale gold color with a small, off-white head. The aroma is lemon peels, hay, caramel, and cereal. Sweet and a little spicy, with a mild and unpleasant bitter aftertaste. Light body, lightly effervescent and a little mealy. Overall, this has some flavor and character, but is still mediocre, at best.

How did this wine a gold medal? This is standard pale lager fare and whilst it won't (can't) offend it doesn't in anyway standard from the heaving sea of macro lager. Less overtly adjunct-driven than Leo (for example) but still clearly shows this character. A little sharpness late which almost feels a little acidic but in fact probably helps with the structure and indeed may well help pair with spicy food.

The most well-known Thai beer, but neither is it the best beer in Thailand nor a good beer at all. Weak in taste, watery. On the pro side: It's cheap and does not give you a headache on the first sip, like some of its local peers do.

Light aroma. More grainy that the usual lager. Some sweetness. Crisp and refreshing. Pours pale golden with a white head. Taste is rounded, yet crisp. Malts and grain.

Bottle at Thai restaurant, Eastbourne. Slightly sweet and spicy beer with decent finish. Remember this as a treat on a warm day in Thailand.

wombat23 (1621) - Texas, USA - APR 5, 2017
Shared 11.2 oz. bottle. Straw color, very small white head. Aroma and taste of corn, grains, cardboard, grass. A below average pale lager, but not the worst I’ve had.

darbeer75 (934) - Round Rock, Texas, USA - APR 5, 2017
Aroma: odd sweet/corn smell; not good; Appearance: clear golden pour with momentary head; Taste: standard macro pale lager; Palate: light bodied with corn/rice finish; Overall: good enough for a Thailand tick I guess.

tmzl (320) - SLOVENIA - FEB 6, 2017
Noble hop hay and citrusy on the nose, higher light malt/grainy sweetness, very light bitterness. Balance towards malt, not as refreshing.
