Sampled at the GCBF. Amber with spiderwebs. Aroma is rye and mild coniferous. Taste is rye (which plays its part in a beautiful viscosity), slight grapefruit sweetness and bitterness. Well balanced. Finish is a balance of pine and grapefruit. First good-quality IPA (which is what this is) Ive had from Quebec.

Hazy dark amber caramel color with extreme activity. Foam explosion, really thick chalky high mesa light brown head of 5 fingers, lasting around 20-30 minutes, with extremely beautiful legs. Flavors of toffee, burnt sugar, roasted grains, grapefruits, clove, ginger, nutmeg, Belgian yeast, herbal spices. Rich feel of sugar and malts, with sharp yeasty spicy bitterness, reminiscent of ginger bread. Silky smooth milky medium body with crispy carbonation. Quite long medium to strong strength finish, lingering sharp roasted rye and barley malts, leafy hops, fresh yeast, fruity esters, with hints of wood and nuts. Good balance because it feels bold but quite fresh, even for a 3 year old bottle. Feels like a cross between a Belgian and Amber Ale. Complex with excellent flavors and a quality caramel feel. Overall superb quality craft.

Bouteille.

Alengrin (5097) - BELGIUM - NOV 14, 2015
Canadian rye IPA from a 50 cl bottle. Thickly lacing, egg-white, dense, regular, completely closed and well retaining head over a lightly hazy coppery amber coloured beer. Complex and very fragrant aroma of candied orange (marmelade), biscuit, mandarin, peach, dried banana, rye bread, strawberry, chestnuts, dry hay, spring flowers, lime zest, caramel, toasted onion, sweetbread, ginger powder, dried red berries, bitter honey, chicken spices. Cleanly dried fruity onset, hints of figs, dried mango and hazelnuts, sweetish and sourish but both are well in balance with each other, medium to strongish carbo, bit minerally. Smooth malty middle phase, caramelly, very nutty with a gentle rye sourishness and spiciness as well as softly bittering toasted edge supporting the finishing hop character, spicy, deeply leafy and herbal, but aromatic as well, with elegant retronasal citrus peel, pine resin and dried flower qualities, drying the end phase and well in balance with the nutty malts. Very enjoyable beer, delicious in the nose and well-balanced in the mouth, tilted towards the malty side but still with a lot of delicate North American hop fragrance. Recommended for those who are into the maltier side of IPA.
