The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

On draught during the "Fat Head’s Hits Bob’s Bar" event on 05/17/2016. Hazy orange color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruit, malt and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of piney hops, caramel malt and citrus, The finish is fruity hops up front with a lingering toffee and malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

A big beer. Aroma of aged barleywine, and hops. The hop bitterness was subordinate to the big barleywine. still very drinkable.

On tap at the brewery tap Sf. Clouded golden / orange coloured pour with a thick off white froth. Aroma is subdued, solvent, nail polish remover, caramel. And toffee apple. Flavour is composed of harsh grains, toffee, apple, harsh solvent alcohol bite. Palate is semi sweet, frothy, highish carbonation, harsh solvent finish. Not a fan headache inducing.

"Had this side by side w the old version. This one is lighter and slicker, hoppier, more floral and fruity, but also a tad bit less complex. For lovers of IIPAs and hop forward barleywines like Bigfoot, this is a winner."

rosenbergh (11532) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAY 4, 2015
Draught at the Rogue Taproom, Portland, OR. Cloudy golden colour with a tiny off-white head. Sweet malt, grassy and fruity hops, mild bitterness and sweet malty notes in the aroma. The flavour is super strong... sweet malt, bitter hops and some alcohol. Resiny hops really... and sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught @ Rogue Ales Public House, San Francisco, CA
Pours hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, alcohol and grape. Taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long sweet, warm, caramel and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

750 from Wegman’s. Pours turbid orange with minimal off-white hjead. Nose is orange marmalade, hops, tannins. Tastes rich, even somewhat cloying, perhaps, with heavy orange marmalade notes, hops, peach, and an overall finishing sweetness. Well hidden alcohol, but lightweights need not apply.

Fin (10541) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - AUG 14, 2015
Bottle consumed at Cropredy, Fairports Annual Reunion Festival 2015, Thurs 13th, shared with Craig. A mid/warm gold beer with a white filmy head. Really oily, silky, syrupy, very busy with lots going on here. This is very hoppy and therefore I can see the IPA connection but also it does lean towards Barley Wine in fact I think it’s sits there more so for me. I like this, ok it’s fiercely sweet but there is bags of flavour, juicy hops, toffee, fruit, it’s all in here. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov16 3.9
