COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned - 150 cl, 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles. Named Grande Réserve in 75 cl bottles, and Magnum Grande Réserve in 150 cl bottles.
Chimay Blue is principally distinguished by its character of a strong beer. This is a beer whose fragrance of fresh yeast with a light, flowery rosy touch is especially pleasant. Its flavour, noticed when tasting it, only accentuates the pleasant sensations perceived in the aroma , while revealing a light but pleasant touch of roasted malt. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

Belgian yeast, plum, other dark fruits in the nose. Looks beautiful, hazy brown with thick brownish, long-lasting head. Taste starts off with a a subtle sweetness, middle is slightly sour and finish gives you a long-lasting belgian yeast and caramel aftertaste. Medium bodied, heavy carbonation. Not clolyingly sweet and alcohol is well masked. Not the most complex belgium strong ale I’ve had, but it’s lack of cloying sweetness and it’s subtle balance make this a good one.

2016 330ml bottle from Melbourne Street Cellars pours very dark brown with generous foamy off-white head. Aromas of yeast, stone fruit, spice and floral characters. Brown sugar, caramel malt, yeast, dried fruit and alcohol. Initial sweetness decays quickly leaving a short dry finish which is a little unexpected. Generally a little thin to mask the 9% alc vol, not helped by the high carbonation. Definitely not as rich as some of the other trappist beers.

Poured into a tulip from a bottle marked 2015. Appearance a dark brown, quite cloudy with 1.5 fingers of fluffy light-tan head. Fruity on the nose. I pick up dark fruit, cherries and a raisin sweetness. The flavour is dominated by malt sweetness, raisins and cherries. Faint hints of vanilla and dark wood. Brings to mind a sweet Christmas cake. Medium-to-full body, nice and smooth with enough carbonation that there’s some crispness in there too. It makes for a good balance. The aftertaste is as boozy and warm as you’d expect from a 9% ABV beer, but it’s masked by the lingering raisin and malt sweetness. Overall I’d call it fruity, malty and a pleasure all around. Quite a lot going on in here and I look forward to the next time.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

1998 vintage. Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer. Poszło mocno w Barleywine (melasa, śliwki itepe), alkohol totalnie schowany, ale trochę wodniste. Tak czy siak - ogromny szacunek.

From 33 bottle. Pours intense brown, with a limited whitish head. Aroma is of coffee, caramel and licorice. Body is medium-thick, with quite some carbonation and stickiness at the same time. Sweet dominates taste with just a hint of bitter. More sweet finish. A great beer
