PalCabral (162) - - OCT 27, 2013
Bottle from Systembolaget. Pours hazy and pale, with a froth head that quickly settles to a thin layer. It’s not a looker - it looks terribly thin. Those poor monks had to do with the second or third runnings... It looks like a wheat beer but the thin head tells the truth that there is none or very little wheat in the malt bill. The aroma is more promising. The chimay yeast comes through in a way we don’t feel it do in the other beers, where it is hidden behind more flavorfull malts. It’s sweet and citrusy, maybe some butterscotch hints too. Very entising. However, the flavor lets the beer down. It is thin. The pilsner malt cannot carry the taste alone and the hops comes in to play first string. In the back of the mouth some of the citrus is still there but is a refreshing beer at best. Just not enough flavour. High effervecence and light mouthfeel puts the closing chapter on a negative note. I understand why it was a beer for the monks only.

Bottle, Wetherspoon’s. Pours a beautiful gold with generous foamy head. Well carbonated. Soft citrus, yeasty nose. Crisp, refreshing but decent depth to it with layers of yeast and citrus. Nice summer beer.

bananas (esters), phenolics, some green apple notes, bubblegum, raisins, grapes. Combination of sweet, somewhat bitter, again phenolics, some alcohol, smooth, and high carbonation with a lovely fluffy mouthfeel. Overall great but with a somewhat impaired drinkability

A good beer. Has many of those familiar abbey ale elements but far lighter and less rich. Nowhere near as rare as it used to be and that’s a good thing. Smooth and drinkable, yet flavourful.

Bottle sent by Chimay’s importer for review. I get to re-acquaint myself with the entire line of Chimay ales. This turns out to be almost sessionable. Light malt sweetness in the nose means this does not stand out as much as some strong stout or IPA. A thick, puffy white foam with some fizziness. The taste offers aromatic Belgian malts. Sweetness without the tempering of hop bitterness, yet it settles pleasantly on the tongue. Leaves just a slight aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours pale gold with thick white head and substantial lacing. Nose of orange citrus, coriander, and substantial floral notes. Orange citrus followed quickly by coriander. Effervescent body. Long, mouthcoating finish.

sinte (568) - Udine, ITALY - JUN 20, 2017
Bottle 0.33L. Hazy pale golden body with a large, frothy white head, mostly lasting with nice lacing. Moderate malty (grains, caramel) and hoppy (citrus, flowers) aroma. Moderate bitter and light-to-moderate sweet flavour with a bitter average-lasting finish. Light-to-medium body with watery-to-oily texture; average carbonation. Watery, thinner than expected.

Turtles (2653) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - JUN 13, 2017
Keg @ Belgobaren, Stockholm. Hazy bright golden, brief white head, poor lacing. Fruity and herbal aroma, mild yeast notes, leaves and hay. Light mouthfeel, fairly crisp but a bit watery. Bubblegum yeasty and fruity taste, orange, apricots and red apple. Mild bitter finish.

jimhilt (2610) - Bow, New Hampshire, USA - JUN 9, 2017
Pours a one finger white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Pale, hazy, straw color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Light malt and Belgian yeast nose, flavor is herbs, Belgian yeast and light grain, some bitterness at finish. $5.45 for a 330ml bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

Listigovers (1171) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 1, 2017
Cloudy light golden beer. Smells bright and yeasty with a definite herbal character. Taste is lots of chimay yeast with a light herbal hop, some more muted citrus tones or peel. Body is light to be a bit watery, overall it is nice.
