COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned - 75 cl, and 33 cl bottles.
Ingredients: Pilsner malt (French barley from Champagne); wheat starch or flour (10% - 15%); dextrose (5%); malt extract (0.1%); hop extract from German Hallertaur (aroma) & American Galena (bittering) hops. Yeast & liquid invert sugar added to the bottled beer.
Chimay Red is noted for its coppery colour which makes it particularly attractive. Topped with a creamy head, it gives off a light, fruity apricot aroma produced by the fermentation. The taste perceived in the mouth is a balance confirming the fruity nuances noticed in the fragrance. Its taste, which imparts a silky sensation to the tongue, is made refreshing by a light touch of bitterness. To the palate, the taster perceives a pleasant astringency which complements the flavour qualities of this beer very harmoniously. This top fermented Trappist beer, refermented in the bottle, is not pasteurised.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2015 I think this was the first trappist beer I tried. I remember it fondly and trying to get everyone to try some. Sort of a toned down less smooth version of the Blue label. Very nice. Serving: Bottle

14/20 Great rich fruity taste - the taste I like from Belgium beers. Big taste for 7% but some of the stronger beers do have a deeper boozier taste. Slightly too carbonated, but definitely a winner.

From Sep 2006 Poured from caged and corked 750ml bottle(cork says 2006) a cloudy rusty brown with a huge head of foam that just won't quit. Lacing abounds! The smell is of spice, yeast, and sweet malt with a touch of citric fruit. The taste has some caramel sweetness up front with a splash of dark fruit, mainly plum but also fig. Midway through, the sweetness comes back with some citrus bitterness that grows right through to the finish. Nice taster and quite easy to drink. Bottom line: Very nice Dubbel that should not be overlooked. I recommend it!

Zoet, fruitig, licht kruidig. veel koolzuur, licht bitter in de afdronk. Lijkt een beetje op grimbergen dubbel maar dan zwaarder. Weinig complex, haalt het niet bij de Westmalle dubbel.

Pours a dark copper colour with a big offwhite head that quickly recedes leaving a spotty mould that lasts the remainder of the glass. Aroma is slightly malty with some fruit and a little alcohol. Taste is sweet and a little bitter. There are notes of nutty malt, red apple, some spicy phenolics, caramel, a touch of medicinal and solvent. Body is light-medium with lots of carbonation. This is the beer that got me into continental beers. My tastes have since trended from Brussels to Bavaria but this is still a complex and enjoyable beer.

Aromat karmelu, brązowego cukru, lekka waniliowość, utlenienie, suszone owoce. Smak zbalansowany ale słodki. Ładny brązowy kolor i piana obfita, grubopęcherzykowa - typowo belgijska. Fajne piwo.

Beim ersten Mal war ich nicht überzeugt, war aber auch etwas zu warm... heute schmeckt es mir deutlich besser: starke dunkle Karamel Note mit angenehmen sauren und auch bitteren Anteilen. Fruchtig und stark. Typisch belgisches Bier. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bought @ Carrefour. Aroma is yeast, banana and ripe fruit. Tad artificial. Taste is thin, a bit roasted, ash and fruity. Rather unpleasant. Palate is slightly dry. Finish is a muddle.

the perfect baseline for anybody's understanding of beer. in my first tasting of this, i was reminded of all of my favourite beers in trying to describe what chimay red's flavour is. it has the smoothness of a hazelnut brown ale, matched with the tropical fruitiness of a munich weiss, the dark/light nature of a dunkel, alongside the skilled fermentation required for the best saisons. this beer is both accessible to any palette and impressive to the experienced looking for something special. chimay's red is the centre of the compass for exploring truly good beer. 420

In the aroma i find something from a fruitiness, not citrus but more red fruit on an undertone of malt. It looks rather clear-copperish with a nice head. The taste has a nice bitterness with a touch of sweetnes, not yeasty. Reminds me of old-style abbey-beer(before the trippels and dubbels) beer much but more sophisticated. A good body , creamy in the mouth with a hint of yeastyness in the aftertaste. Very enjoyable.
