COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
BREWED JULY 19 & NOVEMBER 11, 2014

The base beer is the recipe of 2014 Stone Homebrew Competition winner Chris Banker, an intensely flavorful milk stout brewed with coffee and spices to mimic the rich flavors of Mexican hot chocolate.

IN THE MASH: U.S. Pale, Maris Otter Pale, Crystal, Black Patent, Coffee Malt & Chocolate Malt IN THE BOIL Challenger & East Kent Golding Hops

SPECIAL INGREDIENTS: Lactose, Flaked Oats, Coffee, Vanilla, Pasilla Peppers, Nutmeg, Cinnamon & Cocoa

AGED in French Oak Extra Añejo Tequila Barrels that previously held Bordeaux Wine

CELLAR NOTES: We were so smitten with the initial batch aged in extra añejo tequila barrels that we brought in more barrels and brewed more beer specifically to fill them. The barrels smelled amazing, with aromas of vanilla crème brulée, dulce de leche and tequila. The result is both satisfyingly expected and surprising at the same time: Sweet caramel-like flavors, black pepper, vanilla and tequila notes meld seamlessly with the spice, roasted coffee and chocolate flavors of the base beer for a richly intense experience.

Bottle at home. Almost pitch black with a brief, beige head. Dry and woody with cinnamon, chocolate and earthy chili feel. Not much heat or sweetness.

500ml corked bottle, 2015 vintage. Cinnamon aroma with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, tequila, coffee and pepper. Pours black with a thin mocha brown head that has excellent retention and lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt and chocolate flavors with a rich full body and roasty mouthfeel. Finishes smooth and dry with vanilla, tequila and pepper with a large amount of roasted coffee that lingers on the palate after each sip. A little too much coffee, but still pretty good.

@ Beerlovers Bar, thanks to Geert DB. Nice boozy, vanilla and chocolate aroma. Taste is nice soft roast with more vanilla and dark chocolate. Mild tasting. Palate is a tad too thin though. Aftertaste mild chocolate and booze.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, black chocolates, with some light coffee notes with some light barrel notes. Taste is super complex with nice black chocolate notes with lactose, peppers, coffee with some oak and light barrel-aged notes rounding off any rough edges. Body is full with good carbonation and no overly apparent alcohol notes. Great balance of different flavours which end up working quite well together.

500 ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting brown head. Aromas of roasted malt, cocoa, tequila, oak and light spice. Palate was light bodied and smoith with a dry warming finish. Flavors of cocoa, roasted malt, light chilies, light tequila and light oak with a smooth dry warming lingering cocoa finish.

500 ml bottle 2015 series. Pours a very dark brown almost black in color and topped by a thick tan colored head of foam that shows nice retention and leaves streaks of lace behind in its wake. The aroma is nice showing notes of dark cocoa, roasted coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, chili pepper spice, vinous red wine notes, and a touch of earth tequila to go with the toasted caramel malt base. The flavor follows and shows a nice mix of Mexican chocolate notes of dark cocoa, cinnamon, chili pepper spice, and vanilla to go with the toasted caramel malts, roasty bitterness from the coffee, and the vinous red wine and tequila notes. Really nice balance between the sweet, roasty, bitter, and barrel notes. Nearly full bodied and very smooth with balanced carbonation that leads to a lengthy dark chocolate, vanilla, and roasted coffee finish with just a touch of chili spice and linger red wine/tequila notes. This really surprised me as to how well this came together. Really tasty stuff here that you should definitely try if given the chance. Still drinking beautifully right now even with some age on the bottle.

July 2017 - Tasting at One Canada Square. Cork and cage bottle as 'Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout - Extra Añejo', 8.5%, 2015 vintage, aged in bordeaux tequila barrels. Slight gush upon opening. Almost opaque black, slight red hue, foamy brown head. Aroma is mostly cinnamon, also vanilla and nutmeg, chocolate and some light tequila. Body is smooth with light carbonation. Taste is earthy and spicy up front, lots of chocolate and cinnamon, papery, not showing lots of tequila, not soured up as I'd been led to believe, lingering chili-cinnamon spice. Nice stuff but much of a muchness in relation to the base beer for me. (8-4-8-4-16=4.0)
