The impact of homebrewers on the American craft beer industry has been immense. The comfort level and lack of inhibitors provided by a domestic brewing environment fosters a near limitless brand of experimentation, allowing homebrewers to push te beer envelope to its breaking point. Many of the professional brewing world’s best recipes--from West Coast IPAs to imperial stouts and even sours--began as homespun standouts so spectacular they had to be unleashed on the world in order to improve it.

With this in mind, each year we hold an American Homebrewers Association sanctioned homebrewing competition, the champion of which gets their recipe brewed and distributed nationwide by Stone. This year’s winner, Chris Banker, helped keep us grounded to our homebrewing roots by introducing flavors consistent with our regional apalate. His chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, chile pepper, and coffee-infused milk stout was built to mimic the flavors of Mexican hot chocolate, a beloved specialty from our neighbors to the sout, as our collaborators from Baja California, Cervezeria Insurgente, will attest. Layered with tiers of earthiness, spice, and roast, this creamy, semisweet blue ribbon beer confirms that the spirit of the American homebrewer is not only alive and kicking but thriving at an all-time high.

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2018 I think this is a good beer, but how disappointed I was that it was nowhere near a great beer. It’s very good, but hindered by the fact that it could be great if the pepper and any other flavor but cinnamon came to the game.

Can, Berlin version, December 2017. Cocoa, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, light camomille. Has more aroma than flavour, rather light body, spicy but also nutty flavour with a spicy chili finish. Not enough body to justify such a spice onslaught.

2/17/2018 (12 fl oz bottle): Smokey chili, chocolate, char, oak, and dark chocolate aroma; deep dark brown color, near black, minimal tan-colored head; semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla, cacao nibs, licorice, coffee, mild cinnamon, chili (a bit like chipotle), mild heat, ; medium to medium-full body, smooth and creamy; excellent chili flavor, love the smoke and char, chocolate, coffee, and cinnamon are there, but reserved, want more HEAT though.

Pours very dark with a modestly sized tan head. The aroma has smooth roast, coffee bitterness, dry spices show through and has a very creamy aspect. It has a medium / full body with sharp carbonation that’s pretty gentle due to the sturdiness of the body. It starts off more rich than the aroma. Lots of chocolate shining through, roasted malt, swirls of vanilla, earthy hops and coffee bitterness. The finish has a bit of the pepper meatiness, more spice and a lingering dark chocolate / coffee bitterness. Excellent stout.

UPDATED: FEB 15, 2018 2/14/18 With Abby on Valentine’s Day. Watching New Girl before cooking steaks. Poured from bottle. Opaque black with minimal brown head. Nose is lots of coffee. Some dark chocolate and maybe spice behind. Taste is crazy complex. Coffee up front with chocolate and peppery spice - kinda like molé. Vanilla, cinnamon. Sweet with bitter finish. Soooo good. Big thick palate. Spice finishes. Great interplay of sweet and bitter. Wow. One of the most flavorful beers I’ve had. Doesn’t get any better.

Half in tap east. Extreme cold probably reducing the flavour but a chilli burn detectable and some coffee grounds. Feeling pretty wrecked.

On tap at Patrick's. A black beer with a dark beige head. Cute lacing. Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, oats, cinnamon, cloves and ginger in the aroma. It's full bodied, semi-sweet and smooth on the carbonation, with a light touch of bitterness and alcohol warmth. Roasted malts, vanilla, licorice, coffee and ginger in the flavor. Some cloves. Lasting finish. A very pleasant one indeed, but a bit on the spiced side I think. 180210

UPDATED: FEB 9, 2018 Pours a thick syrupy black with thin brown head. Aroma of roasty dark chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon. Taste is initially sweet and spicy with chocolate, vanilla and cayenne. Then finishes with the dry bitterness of baker's chocolate and coffee beans. Palette isn't as thick as the pour would suggest and it doesn't feel to heavy either. Probably one of the more complex beers I've ever had.
