All beer was once dark, but it was not until modern kilning of malts in the early 1800’s and the discovery of cold fermenting Lager strains in the 1840’s that allowed all the beautiful flavors of a Dunkel to come to life. Dunkels, including Chuckanut’s, are typically a deep reddish-brown color, capped by an impressively sturdy tan head. As in all lagers, the flavors in Dunkel are produced directly by the ingredients; in this case some of the malts have been roasted, giving Dunkel toffee, chocolate, coffee, and even licorice notes. There is just enough bitterness to balance out the malt. Chuckanut Brewery’s Dunkel has won a total of 7 prominent medals since 2009(4 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze) from the GABF, World Beer Cup 2010, WA Beer Awards and the NABA.

Deep amber with a creamy tan head. Chocolate, earth, malt, and a bit of molasses. Solid. Tasty.

On tap at Chuckanut, pours a clear dark amber / mahogany with a medium beige / tan head. Aroma is subtle, with notes of bready malt and light toasted nuts. Flavour is very restrained, even for the style, with notes of lightly toasted nuts and bready malt. Nothing special but competently brewed. Decent.

Draft at Uber, Seattle. Bright copper, long lasting foam. Very European malty lager aroma. Sweet grain, right to a darker lager style. Rosy fruit. Nice enough.

notalush (5909) - Lakewood, Colorado, USA - JAN 10, 2015
Tap - decent rendition, but nothing stand out - light nutty maltiness, light caramelized sugars, mild balancing acidity - finish is a bit watery, with some leafy bitterness - okay.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange to brown with a small white head. Aroma is toasted malty and breadish. Toasted, breadish and caramelish malty. Bitter and toasted into a medium dry finish.

yngwie (17168) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - DEC 19, 2014
Bottle. An almost clear one, dark amber to brown in color and with a small, dense, beige head. Toffee, dried fruits and some notes of orange in the aroma. A bit boring perhaps, but pleasant. That goes for the flavor too, with a nice bitterness added. More evident dried fruits in the flavor, with toffee and some orange peel touch. Full body and soft carbonation. Lasting finish. A pleasant one, but I wouldn’t object to more complexity. 141219
