COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To give this beer a wonderful roasted flavor, we added unmalted, very darkly roasted barley. The roasted barley is mixed with a generous portion of chocolate colored malt giving the Blast Furnace Stout a beautiful ruby hue.

We used our finest hops unsparingly to create a delicately balanced bitterness with a rich roastiness and fresh hop aroma. The East Kent Goldings hops were added with heavy hands at two different times. This unbridled addition grants a full hop flavor to our heavenly drink.

Editor’s note: This brewery uses Church Brew Blast Furnace Stout as a name for one of their beers (an oatmeal stout), but the name remains on the board at all times to signify that they always have a rotating stout which is not necessarily the BFS. Please check with your bartender to see which stout is currently on tap.

Draft. Poured ruby brown with a medium-sized tan head. Aroma and flavor were lots of roasted malt, light chocolate and coffee, earthy hops. Medium mouthfeel. Nicely done. One of the better beers sampled in one evening at Church Brew.

A very tasty stout that I tried for the first time on my first trip to Pittsburgh back in 2010 for a conference. Black and roasty. Not as sweet as I thought it would be, but still has quite a bit of chocolate, a little molasses, and coffee.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated pretty quick. Streamy lace. The aroma had a good amount of roasted dark malts, substantial milk chocolate tones, some dark chocolate, some woodiness and a little bit of smoke. The flavor was towards the roasty side at first and bit into the sweetness slightly. Long roasty aftertaste and finish. The palate was about medium bodied and leaning towards a decent sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Roastiness doesn’t feel a bit bigger than expected but I didn’t mind. Overall, pretty damn good stout that I would love to have again.

Pours a dark reddish-black with a spare off-white head. Mild aroma of oil and roasted malt -- it smells nice but it’s a little odd for a Stout. Flavour of roasted malt, chocolate, oatmeal and a touch of hops. Medium bodied.

On tap in a church. Mahogany pour, some white or off white head. Aroma is dense coffee grinds, hop, some spice, malt. Flavor is the same. Good bit of bitterness. Didn’t think this was so sweet but just a really well balanced stout.

Draft. Black pour with tan head. Roasted, chocolate, spiced aromas. Chocolate and roasted flavors compete with a rye finish.
