COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
About 150 years ago, this dark style lager was first brewed in Munich, Germany. Our version is fairly dark in color, but don’t be afraid. It is a perfect example that dark beers are not always strong beers. The body is surprisingly mellow, and the alcohol content is a bit lower than most people might think. It has a wonderfully clean and roasty aroma. Hop bitterness levels are kept in line, but is has a noticeable hop flavor. Our Pious Monk Dunkel finishes crisp and clean as a lager should.

Beautiful clear mahogany with ruby highlights, soapy white head. Nose roast and surprising chocolate, sweet. Taste strong sweet with good malt depth, good roast and malt, some subtle berry. Full body, little earthiness, low but pleasant and clean bitterness. Think I could go through two or three, a nice straightforward crowd pleaser! [2017.05.23: 3.6]

As their description says, I expected a higher ABV than 4.3%. A little hoppy but not too bitter. Has a strong, dark beer taste if you like that type of beer. For me it was OK, though probably won’t drink again anytime soon.

bottle @ House of 1000 Beers / New Kensington PA --- Aroma of malt and brown sugar. Clear amber brown color, ivory head that stays at one-finger, streamers of lace. Taste is malt and brown sugar that moves through medium carbonation on the swallow to slight bittering, but no discernible hops. A light solid Dunkel.
