COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
About 150 years ago, this dark style lager was first brewed in Munich, Germany. Our version is fairly dark in color, but don’t be afraid. It is a perfect example that dark beers are not always strong beers. The body is surprisingly mellow, and the alcohol content is a bit lower than most people might think. It has a wonderfully clean and roasty aroma. Hop bitterness levels are kept in line, but is has a noticeable hop flavor. Our Pious Monk Dunkel finishes crisp and clean as a lager should.

This poured a brown color with a small white head. Aroma was slightly roasted, and a bit nutty, some sweetness too. Flavor was very watery and bland, but nothing offensive, some sweetness and slightly roasted.

12 oz bottle, via CMUBEERMAN. Pours a clear dark copper/orangish color with a small off-white head that faded quickly. Aroma is rather grainy with some caramel and toasted malts. Flavor overall is very minimal, just pale malt with a light bitterness in the finish. None of the malty sweetness I look for. Mouthfeel is very thin with very active carbonation. Overall, except for the color, this was a Pale Lager. No sweetness or body, the hallmarks of the style for me.

Bottle (12oz). No ClowGr’s tasting, shared with blankboy, jerc, mabel and tupalev. Hazy copper, pretty much no head. Earthy, mildly funky aroma, herbal and roasty. Taste - weak roast, lemon sourness, dry and grassy. Mouth - weak, watery, lightly acidic - meh.

Bottle courtesy of lukin013. Pours brown with a thin white head. Smells of spice, caramel, tea. Tastes of sweet malt with hints of molasses and dark fruit. Finishes sweet.

Thanks to lithy for this one - Clear, cola-ish brown, with a nice off-white head. Toasty, slightly smokey aroma. Roasty, toasty flavor, too. Plus some coffee, some smokey notes, and, uh, mint? Maybe?

Bright fiery brown color with a smallish taupe colored head. Caramel aromas with a accent of darker toasted malts. HInts of floral hops as well. Sweet toasty flavors mix with a mild caramel and light honey taste. Quite roasty and toasty in the finish. A rather simple brew, a touch sweet more like a toasty amber.

At the source: pours light for an dunkel with a white head. Aroma is caramel and light fruitiness. Taste is sweet, fruity and malty. Respectable.

UPDATED: OCT 13, 2008 If pious means sacred or majestic, then this ain’t pious. However, a dark lager with a sweet aroma. Pretty brown but not dark brown in my steelers mug. OK flavor with a little syrup feel to it. Has a bitter finish but is not lasting.
