UPDATED: FEB 21, 2013 Pours a deep black with a reddish tint. Thin deep tan head that recedes into a barely there ring around the glass; no lacing. Aroma of smoke, dark roasted coffee and some malty characteristics. Taste is peat smoke up front, but it is well balanced with burnt sugar, bitter coffee and some hoppy bitterness. Smoky, but not overly so. High CO2 and quick bitter, slightly smoky and somewhat oily finish with a hint of astringent alcohol. Not my usual brew, but a nice change... wish it came in a smaller bottle because 650ml is a little much for one session. Still,a nice brew.

Not a big fan of this one. I thought I would like the "smokey" taste, but the peat taste is too overwhelming. Not a horrible beer, but far from being a favorite.

Holy smoke is one of the most unique beers I’ve had and it’s local to boot! It’s a nice, heavy ale with such a unique smokey flavor. It’s not a beer to have too many of. But 2-3 of them to sip on and savour can’t be beat!

650mL bomber from the Lickbow. Pours a brownish amber with a tiny beige surface film. The aroma is pleasant enough, some vague caramalts underneath some decent smoke, but no peat and nothing else that reminds me of whisky. Flavour is alright, some sweet indistinct malts and complimenting smoke, but with a sour acidic finish, though not in an infected sort of way, more of a poorly made kind of way. Feels light on the palate despite the ABV, in fact it’s a bit too carbonated for my liking. This is an okay beer but honestly, I’ve come to expect disappointment from this brewery.

smoke, minimal head, black, medium bitterness, umami, full body, thick feel, lively, long finish,

It pours ruby with deep mahogany highlights; the head is light beige and foamy. The aroma has notes of: peat, bacon, wood-smoke (hickory), and cracker. The taste is light sweet that finishes light umami; there are notes of: charcoal, peat, and bread. The palate is light-medium bodied, watery, light carbonation, and a medium finish. Overall, the body doesn’t support the heavy smoke flavour.

Bomber from LCBO. Pours deep clear brown, with a head that dissipates quickly into thin lacing. Aroma is... smoke. Think campfire. There’s a little whisky and molasses in there too. Taste is smoky up front, weak and watery at the end. This was not for me - sadly, it was a drain-pour.

Pours black with a small white ring. Aroma is peat smoked malts and roasted malts. Taste is smoke and roasted malts. Peat wood and earthy notes. It says scotch ale. But I have a hard time picking up any elements of a scotch ale.

neongolden (1649) - Linköping, Sweden/Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 8, 2012
(650mL bottle from LCBO) Poured dark slightly reddish brown with a mid-sized off-white head. Aroma of peat, smoke, earth, wood, leather and a bit of oxidization. Flavour contains most of the characters from the aroma with a sweet caramel malt core to balance a fair bit of bitterness, smoke mostly held in check but becomes a bit heavy when the beer is warm near the end of the glass. Mouthfeel is fairly thin, overly carbonated. A lot going on but a bit unbalanced, still a nice glass in cool weather.
