The Last Spike refers to the ceremonial final spike driven to connect the rails of the First Intercontinental Railroad, connecting the East and West together in 1869. Cigar City Brewing Coronado Brewing Co. have teamed up 144 years later to celebrate that momentous union.

By taking from the beginnings of a California-born style of beer and incorporating an American IPA spin, we offer a more robust and hop-forward version of a California Common. This beer has moderate notes of sweet toasted bread with a caramel background that is contrasted by traditional woody notes of Northern Brewer hops, pine notes from Chinook with supplementing white grapefruit notes from Pacific Jade. Prepare your palate for a full-flavored twist to an American craft brewing tradition.

A: yeasty and malty smell. A sort of weird funky earthy like stale hops. A: Looks great on the pour. Red amber with a creamy full tan head. T: Yeasty. Earthy. A weird sweetness that lingers around. Sweetness, not from alcohol, but it’s like stale broccoii or something. P: Terrible on the palate. Carbonation is good but the flavor profile is very off. Finish is awful. Like I said that sweet stale vegetable note. Overall just not a good beer (perhaps inherent of the style). There is a hint of malt but that’s about it for good flavors. This will be rough to finish.

Bottle... Clear deep-amber pour with an orange tint and a mid-sized, fluffy, off-white head. Fantastic retention. The bouquet is nutty, biscuity and malty with supplementary notes of fruitcake and flora. Full-bodied with moderate carbonation. The flavor is a near-replicate of the aroma – malty, nutty, biscuity toastiness playing nicely with medium-bitter, earthy hops. Finishes nutty, grassy and mildly bitter.

Bottle thanks to Hopscotch. Pours amber with a small white head. Aroma is bready with some caramel and fruit. Taste is sweet with hoppy bitterness, with a medium body. Not overly hoppy but it stays with you.

Bottle, shipped to me by hopscotch, shared at the Dean to Mouth tasting. Pours a clear amber beer with a small off white head on top. Aroma is fairly hoppy, faint maltyness and a slight fruity touch. Flavor is rather bitter, watery palate. Quite disappointing for a CCB brew actually. Could have been so much more, but it’s still quite an ok brew.

Benzai (17005) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - FEB 21, 2014
Sampled from bottle @ The Hague tasting. Hazy reddish color, average sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, hops, nicely bitter. Not bad at all.

worldbeertaste (1819) - West Midlands, ENGLAND - FEB 21, 2014
Amber with a white, thick, lasting, lacy head. Smells of caramel, nice fruit, nut and a bit of sweet chocolate. Medium thin body, taste of sweet malt, caramel and a nice bitter hoppy finish. Lasting hoppiness. A nice level of hops,

Bottle @ tasting. Aroma has some malt, some fruity notes. I think there’s a steamy note somewhere. Flavour is mild hoppy notes, fruity and herbal. Nice but expected more.

Poured medium amber with a small white ring. Aroma of light roast malt. Full body, flavour is very bitter, liquorice, dark chocolate.
