4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Shared bottle with Timfoolery. Pours an opaque brown and smells of toffee and bourbon. Just the right amount of SMG. Tastes of toffee and an assortment of dark fruits. A top level beer.
From notes. Enjoyed this as part of the long-anticipated Toppling Goliath Brouhaha with Travis, Chris, Doug, and Ryan at Travis’s house on September 24. 750 mL bottle shared by Chris. The pour is a nice copper-tinted reddish brown with a thicker khaki colored head that slowly fades away, leaving no lace. The aroma is amazing. There is a great caramel and light presence of dark fruits. There is a bit of molasses and a lovely cognac sweetness. There is a little oxidation on the back end, but that’s the only thing I could knock it on. I love this as a rep of the English barleywines. The flavor is much of the same. There is a great caramel and toasted malt up front, dark fruits and a molasses sweetness in the middle and a lightly dry cognac sweetness on the finish. It’s really well balanced and good. There is a hint of oxidation on the tongue as well, that isn’t the best. The mouth feel is thicker and softly carbonated with a great lingering sweet dark fruit, cognac and caramel sweetness on the back end. I am a huge can of this. Long time want also.
