A collaborative beer produced by Terrapin Beer Co. and Cigar City Brewing, two innovative breweries in the deep South. We decided to make a beer that will bring to mind a Southern staple, pecan pie. Pecans were first introduced to colonists by the Algonquin Indians. They referred to the nut as pakan or paccan, which means "a nut so hard that is ha to be cracked with a stone." The two breweries agreed that a malty, dark lager would be a great canvas for such a Southern tradition, graciously slathering heaps of Munich malt and other specialty grains to emulate a portrait of Southern hospitality, the likes of which could conquer any sweet tooth.

And just a reminder, its pronounced puh-CON, not PEE-can!

Bottle shared at a recent Tampa tasting. Pours a deep brown color with an off-tan head. Nose is big notes of pecan, molasses, some caramel and brown sugar also combine in this malty dark lager. Flavor is similar with big sweet malt, some dark fruit, some brown sugar, molasses, big pecan pie sweetness as well. Sweetness and dark fruity character linger into the finish. Medium in body and an interesting concept.

750 ml bottle shard by Phatdog1, thanks?? Aroma has a very off tomato soup nuance, very, very strange. Thank the good lord it does not taste like tomato soup! Really undesirable aroma.

The flavor does have lots of malt and sugar. There is pecan notes notes with roasted malt. Im sorry this is odd. Where the hell is the vanilla?? Sickly sugary sweet with no balance. I had really high hops for this brew. Both breweries are great in their own right. Perhaps something happened in storage or packing and shipping?? I really thought this would be great.... No! What happened here?

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a medium beige head. A sweet nutty and malty nose. Malty, super sweet, dry, earthy, big berries. Light chocolate. A bit of heat. Very sweet, molasses. Unusual.

Poured a dark amber color with aromas of molasses, pecans, brown sugar, pie crust and some light malt. Flavors were gooey pecan filling with some pecans. Dopplebocks are not my style but this tasted like a nice pecan pie. A really sweet treat that should be drank as or with dessert.

750mL bottle pours with a dark amber body that has glowing thin gold edges and supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up molasses, caramel malts, sweet and hoppy wort notes, some mild fruity esters and then malt sweetened ginger snap cookies. Cool. The taste is smooth sweet goodness with molasses, caramel malts and tasty sweet sticky wort flavored spiced cookies. This all rides on a smooth slick rich sweetness that binds everything together. I want to give this about a 3.9 but being the homer I am it needs to bump up higher.

This was a solid dopplebock. There were plenty of flavorful pecan undertones among bready notes and soft, dark chocolate. It could use a little bit of age though; given the style, it was on the dry side.

Brown pour with a light tan head. Aroma is straight up pecan pie: pecans, vanilla, even slight pie crust notes. Flavor is very similar. It is amazing that they were able to match the flavor up so well with this one. Great beer, absolutely spot on with the flavor and awesome concept!

Tasty, tasty, tasty. Pecan and vanilla come out great and there is a nice alcohol taste that hits the pallet. Must try.

Dark amber and vanilla is very strong. Nice sweet pecan vanilla aroma, and I like that it isnt a chocolate imperial (as I expected.) A sweet desert beer nonetheless.
