Pours slightly hazy copper color with off white head. Fruity and citrusy aromas with some caramel. Sweet caramel flavor with juicy citrus hops with moderate bitterness. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Much sweeter and maltier than what I look for in a DIPA, but still a nice Barley wine or American Strong ale. 750 bottle from PUB’R. Pours turbid deep orangy /fall foliage oak leaf color with 1-finger frothy well-retained off-white head. Seriously, if you scored this one lower than a 3 for appearance, then I question your rating acumen, as it looks pretty as a picture. The nose is intense, very barleywiney, with huge caramel malt, hops, fermented dark fruit, mango, cognac, and berries. Tastes super rich, with a heavy caramel malt base, syrupy, with hints of cognac, a less sweet Irish Mist, huge tropical fruit including tangerine, pineapple, mango, and star fruit, and finishing cognac and spirity notes. Stays a bit sweet, with a huge palate heft and complexity. Oh, and don’t forget the hops. There’s more hops in this than you peons deserve, and a little more than that, too. I expect this one to age well for 20 years, and this would pair extremely well with a CAO maduro cigar as an after-meal smoke to a prelude dinner of roasted bartlett pear salad, black pepper-crusted lamb chop, and au gratin potatoes. changeup45 (1731) - Lake Mary, Florida, USA - SEP 7, 2012
Bottle. This is about what I expected. A big sweet malty ale with aggressive resinous hops that probably more resembles an American Barleywine than a Double IPA... The aroma has lots of toffee and resin. Some whiffs of alcohol join, with a touch of grapefruit. Copper colored; pours with a fluffy off-white head that fades to a thin layer. Thin lacing slides along the sides of the glass after each sip. Big and malty, as stated at the top; full-bodied, sweet, and a bit syrupy going down, with mostly resinous, but some citrus hops too. The curacao peel certainly adds an interesting element, and is a welcomed contrast to all the sweet malt. This gets a bit dry in the finish but there’s still a lot of lingering malt. It’s hopped up but there’s not a ton of bitterness. I wasn’t a huge fan of this but I didn’t dislike it either. It’s just a bit too hefty, sticky, and malty for my tastes these days. It is, fortunately, better than the 110K #3 of the series, but that one was pretty bad. Make this an 8-9% Double IPA with curacao peel and the malt kept in check and now we’re talking. 25.4 oz bottle. Misty orange brown that kicks up a frothy, off-white head. Nose is orange and vodka, pineapple, pine and toffee. Holy crap! First sip delivers a burst of flavor; almost full body, syrupy with a tingle then bitter and biting. Taste is candied orange peel, cherry pie, grapefruit and pine. Bomber. Yeast, sweet light fruit, and some barn floor. Hazy orange-brown, 2-cm head, and very slowly rising carbonation. Strong fruit -- stewed peaches -- herbs, alcohol warmth. Deep hopping in mid palate. Sweet finish. Medium-heavy body. Creamy. Seems like it should be sticky, but it isn’t. Almost a dessert beer. Interesting and complex, but a little too sweet in the final. Amber pour, off white head. Very malt forward beer with some clementine, yeast and mild hop aroma. Flavor is sweet, caramel and comes across more like a barelywine.
