750 ml bottle poured into a brandy snifter. The beer is a dark brown to black with a khaki head of foam. The aroma has some prune and raisin notes, but there is a major raspberry character there as well. Raspberry sweetness comes through beautifully. Some chocolate and barrel notes play secondary roles. Big body and moderate carbonation.

750ml bottle. Poured a black color with a smaller sized head. Could smell the raspberries as it was opened and poured. Raspberries, chocolate, roast, fruity, earthy and some wood. Raspberries my favorite fruit in a beer and this one is aging nicely.

Benzai (15619) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 29, 2015
Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus. Opaque black color, average to medium sized quite quickly diminishing brown head. Aroma is malts, huge port and dark fruits, some alcohol, roast and wood. Taste malts, clearly raspberries in the flavor, roasted malts in the background, again heavy on the port and wood. Sweetish, with tart influences of grapepeel, although I guess it originates from the raspberry in this case, but that’s what it reminds me of. I was gonna say there’s also a slight bitter touch to it, but it has disappeared completely and the tart flavors are most dominant overall. In the end, I think this is quite a nice exemple of a blend between a RIS and a fruit, but it’s just not what I like. Too bad, not my thing, but it’s a daring and impressive brew.

Bottle at benzai. Black colour with a medium to large light brown head. Smells very sweet, appelstroop, wood, raisins, raspberry, red fruits, slightly boozy. Tastes raspberry, sweet, appelstroop, raisins. Thick body, soft carbo. Love the raspberry character, but not a huge fan of the appelstroop part. Weird thing is: great beer if it’s in a 33cl bottle shared with 4 friends, but it almost becomes a punishment to drink a 75cl bottle with only 2 people. Good in small quantities. Rated like I only had a small quantity.

vyvvy (6480) - Florissant, Missouri, USA - OCT 26, 2015
Pours dark brown with a tan head. The aroma has chocolate, port, berries, licorice and molasses. It has a full rich body with soft carbonation. The flavor starts with molasses, raspberries, chocolate, soy and alcohol. The finish has some earthy hops, but lots of the fruit and port up front. Really nice imperial stout.

Bottle @ Travlr’s Satellite 10k Shindig. Deep brown pour with no head. Nose unfortunately has a touch of soy sauce in addition to general cocoa, roasted malts, Hershey’s etc. Taste is similar with light accents of forest fruits. A touch of acidity. Full body, oily.

Deep chocolate brown color with a light off-white head. The flavor and aroma is like chocolate covered raspberry. Notes: Denver Rare Beer Tasting ’13

markextrae (4424) - Alingsås, SWEDEN, SWEDEN - DEC 30, 2014
bottle shared by a friend. poured a pitch black colour with somewhat of a deep dark red shade shining true the beer, leaving a very small dark red to brown ring. fresh cut raspberries in front, dark chocolate, chocolate soaked raspberries, cherries, dark roasted malts, toffee, caramel, tobacco, fudge, the port barrel really shines true as it warms, oak, liquorice in the aftertaste, chocolate cake with fresh raspberries, amerena cherries, small tart hint, very taste and a unique stout! you really need to love it or not. but i loved it. can’t wait to try more of those specials brews from cigar city! amazing brew again!!

Bottle with thanks to 50Belair! Pours inky black, medium creamy brown head, slow to dissipate and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is like a raspberry truffle, lots of dark chocolates and fruity goodness. Flavor is sweet, lots of recognizable raspberry, which surprises me a bit, dark chocolates. I am not getting much port or even barrel from the beer. Fullish body, decent mouthfeel, but not up to what I would expect from CCB. A bit hot. Just a touch of astringency, which is perhaps the primary indicator of time spent in wood. Ok, after the beer warms some of the cherry flavors resolve themselves into tawny port a bit.

Leighton (21296) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 31, 2014
Bottle shared during the satellite Travlr 10K tasting at CBC Clerkenwell - London. Many thanks to C-Note for this CC beast. Pours oily black with a bubbly brown head. The aroma is heavy with rich roasted malts, dried raspberries and dense chocolate. Medium to big sweet flavor with pronounced baking cocoa, bitter burnt wood, roasted malts, charcoal, raspberry seeds, dried fruit leather raspberry. Full bodied with fine carbonation and chewy mouthfeel. Lightly warming on the finish with more rich chocolate and decadent, ripe raspberry. Well balanced and not overly hefty. Wonderful.
