Hazy red brown color; small head. Strong vanilla oak aroma, old wood. Medium body strength, good caramel flavor, with some residual sweetness and light smoke touch; lightly nutty too, mostly in the final; the alcohol gives a warming feeling. Good.

Bottle at Bruces 30th celebrations, 08/02/13, thanks to the Jack for sharing this one ! Very dark murky mahogony brown with a thin tan head that dissipates to the edge. Nose is dark malts, bourbon, wood, dark toffee, dark fruits. Taste is dark fruits, figs, nutty, dark caramel, booze, dark malts. Fulish bodied beer with moderate carbonation lending towards a dry boozey finish. Decent.

Bottled (bottle 237/246, vintage 2009)
Dark brown color, steady beige head. Aroma of licorce, oak, vanilla and bourbon. Full-bodied. Vanilla, oak, licorice, bourbon. More complex and more interesting than the normal version.

Bottle. Very dark brown. Not much head. A rather boozy aroma jumps out of the glass, something I dont remember from when I had it at the tap room. The aroma also has sweet vanilla and brown sugar elements from the barrel, and the signature dark fruits and rich malts of the scotch ale. On the palate, this is very sweet, with light fruits and a pretty strong dark malt scotch ale character. The barrel is all over this beer, with brown sugar and bourbon. It doesnt taste as hot as it smelled. The big thing with this beer is that the interaction between the scotch ale and the barrel elements is only okay. On paper, they ought to be quite cohesive but I dont know if Ive ever really loved a bourbon Scotch Ale before so it might just be something that can only peak so high.

mcberko (16920) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 5, 2013
2009 Vintage. Bottle 84/246. 750mL bottle, sent from St. Fun (thanks a lot, Josh), pours an opaque murky dark mahogany with a tiny beige head. Aroma is still quite hot after all these years, with heavy bourbon notes, caramel, and booze. Flavour is extremely potent and rich, full of bourbon barrels, alcohol and rich caramel. Quite boozy, as usual for a Cigar City barrel aged brew. Very round and flavourful, though not as easy drinking as the regular Big Sound. Drinkable in small amounts, but too boozy for much more than that. Decent, but flawed.

Pours a murky brownish-amber color with a finger of off-white head. A nice bourbon and vanilla note to it on top of the rich caramel and toffee malt smells. The flavor is quite similar. Heavy bourbon, vanilla, and wood with a strong caramel malt flavor and some brown sugar.

Bottle at Pilsner Petes RBSG and then again at my house. What are the odds of getting two bourbon barrel aged Big Sounds in one week in NJ? Apparently pretty good. Pours a brownish almost black color with tan head. Nose is coffee, toffee, smoked wood, molasses and brown sugar. Taste is lightly smoked wood, toffee, vanilla, alcohol, maple brown sugar and light molasses.
