COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Bottle courtesy of and shared with Kermis. A quite amazing black pour. It looked like crude oil with a thin glass hugging round head. The aroma is spicy but surprisingly weak. The flavour is ultra rich, bitter and spicy with some medicinal notes on the palate. This won't be to everyone's taste. Some will love it and others won't. For the record, it's a highly unusual ale and I loved it.

Nice chocolate roast with a spicy pepper like scent. Has a big hop roast flavor, spicy kick that crawls up and has a decent burn. I would have to be in the mood for spice, or try this with a bit of age on it.

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2013 Viscous midnight black pour. Huge head (and delicous as hi had to slurp it before it foamed over). Sexiest looking brew out there. Smell isnt as good as the rest. It is more cinammon and vanilla cocoa but still good. Flavor starts astringent and bitter, has some dark fruit, not too much sweetness, slight pepper, bitter cocoa up the ass. Vanilla enters as it warms. Thick mouthfeel. My fav stout.

Poured from a 750ml bottle. Shared while brewing a beer inspired by this one. Very rich and chocolaty, cinnamon, toasty. The peppers have a slight sour note, they are very mild. A nice beer with unraveling complexity. Thanks Jason.

2012 bottle poured in a snifter, thanks to Steve. Whenever you get and share a bottle like this, its an experiance treasured. Other reviewers will nail the taste down, but I will note the chilies held up nicely for a 5 month old bottle. Amazing beer that I hope to enjoy again soon.

I shared this guy at the Pre-DLD tasting. 750 ml bottle served, 2012 vintage in a Deschutes tulip. Had this side by side with the 2011 and Bourbon barrel aged versions. Huge thanks to Eric (Holland) for hitting this long time want. A: Pours a jet black body with dark khaki head forming on the pour. This stuff is viscous. Some splotchy lace is left down the glass. S: Roasted malts, some sweet chocolate and a nice subtle spice are present in the nose. The nose is a tad boring considering what there is in this beer. T: The taste is much better. Nice spiciness from the chilies and there is a touch of some cinnamon. Dark chocolate, some figgy fruit notes and some roasted malts round it out. M: Chewy and thick. The carbonation is on the lower end there is a residual heat from the chilies. O: A very solid beer. The 2011 vintage definitely lost some of the luster and complexity that the 2012 had. This is a stout that must be drank fresh if you want to retain any of those flavors from the spices and the chilies. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-29-2012

2010 and 2011 Hunahpu's vertical tasting. Both poured black with some head. Chillies and chocolate on the nose. 2010 had a lovely milk chocolate flavor with warming chili notes. 2011 had much more of a dark chocolate flavor with the same chili flavor as the 2010. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
