COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Tap at Capones in ’11 and batch#1 bottle compliments of Bill. This review is for the bottle which was close to 3 years old when drank. Pours midnight black with medium coffee head, light lacing. Nose is cocoa cinnamon, ancho chile, smoked wood, hops, tobacco, and vanilla bean. Moderate carbonation. Layered and layered for a stout. One of the best I have tried to date.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2013 Black as night, invoking brown head from its depths. Even a year later, the chilis are more prominent in the nose of the 2012 than previously. Chocolate malt, vanilla, and cinnamon swirl through my olfactory senses as well. Massive body delivers this beast to my palate. Layers of complexity summon bold roastyness atop the above flavors, each jumping forward briefly before fading back into the chorus. Chilis and booze warm my throat as I swallow, leaving a vanilla-chocolate-cinnamon tingle in my mouth long after the beer has departed. An exceptional brew. Huna is the best yearly special release RIS, QED.

(Rating #4583)

2011 Bottle. No head, just a nice lacing around the glass. The scent is of malts, cinnamon, vanilla, and peppers. The flavors blend nicely. The peppers and cinnamon taste good together. The roasted malts and vanilla tame the spice. The after taste is malts and a slight to mild pepper flavor. My palate wasn’t hit much. A pepper flavor coated my mouth but it was pleasant and left a warming sensation. Overall this is a very enjoyable drink.

750 ml. 2012 bottle. Thanks Jason! Pours an oily black with a reddish brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and spices. Taste is dark malt, chocolate, vanilla, molasses, and spices. Some alcohol and pepper warmth at the finish. An experience.

2011 Vintage. S : cinnamon, mollases, boiled vegetables, hints of vanilla, chiles, booze and soy sauce (awful smell). P: black with a very thin lacing. Taste is better then th smell, vanilla and cinammon come through, with roast malt and some chilles in the back. Some heat towards the end. M: syrupy. O: I found this odd, would like to have a fresh one though.

Location: Bottle at Paul’s Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13

Aroma: The nose is rich and malty, with chocolate, coffee, vanilla, pepper/spices, and booze
Appearance: This one pours into the glass a black color with a brown head
Flavor: The taste is heavy malty as well, not particularly sweet, with roast and spice present
Palate: The body is quite full, with a fairly dense feel, and some heat present as well
Overall Impression: I thought this was pretty good, maybe a touch on the heavy side to be super drinkable, but a really nice, well-made beer none-the-less. I’d like to re-visit this one.

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2016 Chilled brown 75 cl bottle poured into a snifter at a JStax tasting. Pours coal black with very little head. Very little lacing, thick chewy body, and light vanilla aroma. Taste is chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla finish. Really enjoyed this one.

2012 Vintage. Dark brown to black. No head. Aroma is gritty alcohol. Dull and overly boozy smell. Vanilla bean and chocolate taste. Also get nuts, heath bar, and cinnamon. Very thick beer. Looks a lot like syrup. If I could drink this beer without smelling it, I would enjoy it much more.

Pours a rich dark brown with a reddish dark brown lacing. Aroma consists of notes of chocolate, coffee and licorice. The flavor is sweet and the palate is somewhat acidic. Some chalkiness is apparent, but it doesn’t take away from the overall experience.
