COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2010 Hand bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours pitch black with a deep almost reddish brown head - I’ve never quite seen anything like it. The aroma is equally unique, a really enticing mixture of vanilla, hard roasted malts, and a whiff of chili - everything perfectly balanced. The body is solid, lots of hard roasted malts, some sweet cocoa comes out and the chili leaves a little bite on my lips. The finish is dark chocolate, the hard roasted malts leaving a little bitterness. Finally a truly unique Imperial Stout with the spicing being perfectly subtle and balanced. I really dig this. 141109

UPDATED: MAR 25, 2013 Bottle at Chriso’s Pre-GBBF Shindig, 2012, London. Thanks to Ed - and Paul (if I recall correctly)! Pours deep brown-black with a thick, brown cream head. Aroma holds some lightly tangy dark malts, booze, heavy roast, some spice. Big sweet flavor, lots of dark malts, stinging alcohol, some dark fruits, raisins, tar, burnt wood. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Hot finish with dark baking cocoa, acidic coffee, booze, charred wood. It has a dry, vinous quality to it. It’s quite hot. Not overly sweet, which is nice. Very, very good. (4.2)

Bottle at The Stouts Tasting, London - thanks to Jack. Pours black-brown with a creamy, brown head. Rich dark malt nose, spices, dark chocolate. Big sweet flavor with oily chocolate, cinnamon and chili, dark char. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Hot finish with more oily, dark chocolate, light chili spice coconut, cinnamon, earthy bitterness, dark malts. Great stuff. (4.3)

Oily black color with barely any head. Nutty and spicy aroma. Thick mouthfeel, undercarbonated, roasted malts, very heavy cinnamon and chili pepper flavor.
Yes, it’s good, but it’s unbalanced and unclassy.

Black color; medium sized dark brown head. Light aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, cacao, light alcohol, very light vanilla. Thick and quite viscous mouthfeel; very strong chocolate flavor, lightly smokey, salty; light chili pepper too; tobacco; more liquorice in the end, with warming alcohol. Peculiar, very good, not easy, but bold.

Bottle at Endo’s house, 25/05/13, thanks to Jason for securing this from the source. Mid black with a big billowing dirty tan head - this looks the bollocks! Nose is dark malt, chocolate, leather, demerara sugars, vanilla, pinch of spice. Taste comprises chocolate, dark malt, vanilla, spice, hint of chilli pepper, sugars. Full body, slightly viscous, smooth on the palate. Great stuff, ticks all the impy boxes, alcohol kept in check and not overly sweet.

Rating #2500. 750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany). Pours pitch black with a small brown head - looks beautiful. Nose of mild chili peppers, which don’t overpower, cocoa nibs, vanilla, hint of cinnamon - the chilis are slightly more prominent in the nose than in the flavour... Flavour is dominated by rich chocolate cake, with vanilla beans, burnt caramel, and subtle chili peppers - the chilis start off more prominent, but then fade into the background. With each additional sip, the chilis becomes less and less noticeable, paving way for intense chocolate cake qualities. Rich layers and full-bodied. Very well-made and enjoyable.

Bottle at Chris’ Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia tasting. I’ve had this twice now, so thanks to both Puzzl and Ken for allowing me the chance to drink this. Oily coconut. Very decent, but lacks a lot of character. Decent, hides alcohol well. Smooth creamy dark choc and I did have quite a bit of this so I must have liked it, but still doesn’t hit the heights, plus I scored it 3.5 the first time and 3.6 this time so pretty consistant.
