COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Light orange pour, thin white head. Light watery body, medium hops. Heavy on the citrus.

Can pour dated 6/18/17. Pours orange with a white head, nice lacing, head that sticks around. Aroma is a weakness of an otherwise excellent IPA, bit vegetal but with some tropical fruit and pine that comes through. Taste is excellent, pine, grapefruit, NW hop forward for sure (probably the classic C’s). Clean finish. Not overly remarkable but would enjoy again for sure.

HAPPY 200th IPA on IPA DAY! 355mL can canned on 2/22/17 Nice looking deep orange gold hazy body, dense head leaves lace. Good punchy hop nose - bitter orange, ruby grapefruit juice, kumquat, pine sap, pale caramel. Enjoyable texture - slick, chewy, sticky, excellent weight & balance, smooth carbonation. Packs plenty - juicy citrus, bitter citrus, oily citrus, sappy wood, cut herbs, lawn clippings, kind of sweet with caramel & toast then quenched with bitterness. Very good IPA, far too drinkable!

Rating #2553 - 2016.05.05 - Can at Bainbridge in Philly. Pour is a hazy orange/gold with a huge white head that bubbles away quickly, no visible lacing. Aroma is grapefruit, tangerine, and floral, grassiness, mild piney note. Taste is mild tangerine sweetness, but a boat load of sticky, resinous, piney hops. This is almost chewy. Assertive Bitterness.

Great nose from a 12oz pour from a can - tropical fruit for sure. Orangey pour with a thick, white pillow. Also, good lacing is present. A definite hop punch is in the taste, but I’m getting a little watery, metallic mix in the bitterness. It’s a solid IPA, but when it was put in the same class as Bells Two Hearted and Fat Head Headhunter, I was hoping for much more. Cheers!

Can from Crush and Grind at Carolina Beach, NC. Pours a hazy orange gold with a sturdy off-white head. Substantial cling. Aromas of pine, candied fruit and bread. Upfront flavors of pine, sweet stone fruit, bread, cut grass and a resiny hop finish. Somewhat dry. Very hoppy, but nicely balanced. Noticable alcohol warmth. Very nice.

12 oz. can from Hurricane Liquors in Anna Maria Island Florida. (Rating from 6/8/2017 after my sister’s wedding in Bradenton Beach, FL). Slightly hazy brilliant orange/yellow body with a small but foamy white head. Strong citrusy/lemon hop aroma along with a clean malt component. Those hops bite in immediately with an aggressive citrus and rind bitterness. This becomes more of a lemon and orange flavor as it goes on. Although the bitterness is very strong, the solid malt body stands up to it with fresh grain and bread but little sweetness, and balances it out perfectly. The alcohol here is evident and burns slightly (although perfectly justified), but I think it’s amplified slightly by the bitterness. The body is actually slightly creamy which is unusual for an IPA of this strength of bitterness and alcohol. Finishes with a long-lasting citrus flavor and bitterness and that clean malt taste. I’ve been waiting a long time to try this beer after reading about how good it is for many years and I’m glad to say that the praise is well deserved. It’s great to finally be enjoying it sitting on a patio looking at the ocean in Florida!

Deep, semi-clear amber pour with small, off-white head. Nose is orange peel, honey, elderflower, caramel. Taste is malty with the hop flavours subdued (this is certainly due to the dated can). Biscuits, caramel and bitter floral hops towards the end. Thick mouthfeel, full bodied, moderate carbonation levels. Could’ve been much better if fresh, but still a very smooth & tasty beer.

From a can, was dated a little bit (2 months or so). Very nice aroma, tropical flavours, nice malt balance but not too much. Could feel a bit of the alcohol, but otherwise best of selection of 7 Florida IPA’s I bought.
