COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2018 Read that Cigar City has recently started selling in Texas. Thanks BEK. So this is my first of what I hope is many from the brewery. Purchased as a six-pack in Odessa, TX yesterday, I cannot wait. I pop the tab on the 12 oz can and pour into my tasting glass, it shows up a slightly hazy dark gold accompanied by a heroic off-white top, good lacing indeed. The smell, very tropical, good intro to me. I take a full drink. A collision of tastes, nicely hoppy, mango, pineapple, a little grassy. Really decent. All this and 7.5% abv which scores points with me.

Got it in the CAN. Deep golden brew with decent head and the smell of citrus. Lots of tropical flavor, mostly mango like hops. Really good brew but had to get it in the CAN.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2018 12oz can at home. Pours hazy golden amber with a sticky off-white head. Juicy citrus and tropical fruit (guava, pineapple), orange peel, caramel, piney and grassy hops. Medium body, medium carb. Juicy, bitter finish. Well balanced in an IPA kind of way. Excellent.

Pours a hazy orange-copper, thick frothy cream colored head, lotsa sticky lace. Nose is heavy in tropics and pine, kiwi, mango. Creamy feel, a fun bite towards the back, pepper. Plenty more tropics, buttery almond, orange peel, pineapple. Lingering bitter sweet finish. Very well done and crushable for the ABV.

Delicious! This is a bar that IPAs should be aiming for. I wish there was a bit more citrus, but the hop presence is focused and balanced with the alcohol and malt body. Very nice.

Medium gold pour, small but persistent off white head. Nose is tropical fruit. Middle is marmalade and malt, hint of caramel, mango and kiwi dancin' in the back ground. Finish is piney and bitter. Beautifully balanced.

Aromas dominated by citrus - mostly orange and a bit of grapefruit. There are some balancing bready aromas, presumably from the malt. The color is a clear light amber with a small off-white head. Taste is somewhat dry and while there is a strong hop presence it is not especially bitter. The body is medium; texture a little oily; carbonation average to just very slightly lively; the finish is fairly long with bready and an attractive citrus fruit flavor. Overall I like this beer quite a bit. The hops have an attractive citrus (orange and grapefruit) flavor without too much bitterness and the malt is prominent enough to provide some balance. Overall it all works quite well together.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2018 1/18/18 Had with Abby while watching 50 first dates and eating Savas pizza. Poured from can. Deep amber with a pillowy white head. Nose is lots of grapefruit hops. Very fruity. Taste is lots of grapefruit pith but well balanced by some caramel malt. Pretty sweet on the tongue and bitter hops on the finish. Medium palate and easy-drinking. Overall, and excellent IPA that is assertively hoppy but well-balanced. Love it.
