COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Estonia’s national epic poem “Kalevipoeg” tells the story of the eponymous hero and his adventures including a search for his kidnapped mother and the vanquishing of his enemies with stones and planks on the advice of a hedgehog. After being killed by a haunted sword, Kalevipoeg’s remains are fated to remain at the gates of Põrgu (hell) where he stands a sentinel for all eternity.

In honor of Kalevipoeg and the people of our favorite Baltic nation of Estonia, we originally brewed this unique lager in 2012 as our 1,000th batch of Cigar City beer. We’ve revived this favorite from the archives and brewed this hefty Baltic Porter with a complex malt bill and an experimental dwarf hop that contributes notes of stone fruit and a subtle spiciness. Rum barrels, in which the beer has spent many months, add a distinct texture and subtle hints of ripe red apple to both the flavor and aroma of this dark, lagered treat.

750 mL bottle. Pours black but a little transparent with very little head. Smells of straight rum. A little soy sauce behind it. Tastes of rum, oak, soy sauce. Not very rich. Disappointing. Lots of barrel flavor, but the beer behind it doesn't come through very well. Medium body and alcoholic. Low carbonation. Meh.

750ml. Roast, dark fruit, walnuts, brown sugar, oak and rum. Barrel is pretty light but rounds it out nicely. Body is on the thin side for something this big, hides the ABV well, but catches up to you.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2017 Bottle from CCB. Big thick black pour. Huge nose of rum, chocolate and roasted grain. Taste is smooth grain and roasted Malta with really nice rum and barrel notes.

Bottle thanks to Rob. Pours black with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong cocoa, roast, rum, wood. Slick body, coconut, roast, brownie, wood, light smoke, very boozy, enjoyed this.

Bottle via trade drank with Ace out on the high seas. Poured a dark black body with anew average sized foamy dark beige head. Aroma/flavor is rum soaked cake, dark fruit, char, barrel, tobacco, vanilla extract, burnt malts, booze. Big full body and some noticeable heat on the end. Nice stuff

Bottle. Dark brown near black with thin khaki head. Big boozy aroma and flavor - no surprise there - with lots of room, a little wood, chocolate, spice, dark fruit and just a hint of roast. Good complexity and flavors, but dialed to 11. Most of the BA Cigar City beers I’ve had have been over-barreled, and this is no exception.

From notes. Tasting at Corbet’s house for Game 5 of the NBA Finals on June 12. 750 mL bottle. The pour is a nice dark, dark brown with a thicker khaki colored head and a good bit of lace. The aroma is full of chocolate and a dark maltiness with a strong dark fruit and a big time rum. This isn’t quite as sweet as I was expecting, which is nice. The flavor is great. Dark fruits and rum up front with a great chocolate and bready malt throughout. There is a little alcohol to it and the rum maintains a nice balance throughout. The mouth feel is thick and heavy with a soft carbonation and a lingeringly boozy rum soaked dark fruit. This is a great beer. 8 4 9 5 17

UPDATED: NOV 23, 2017 Bottle… Pours opaque and dark brown. The aroma is a mélange of soy sauce, fudge and red wine. Medium to full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and adequate carbonation. The flavor is chocolaty, roasty and boozy. Dark-chocolaty, lightly salty finish. I’m not picking up any obvious rum in either the nose or flavor. Liquor? Yes. Specifically rum? No. That’s my nose though.

Dark black. Lots of rum. Not harsh for being rum barrels. Chocolate. Nice. Tasty.

Bottle. Pours almost black with a decent tan head. Aroma of chocolate, rum, malt, and dark fruit. Taste is rum, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruit, and caramel. Very good.
