huge, fresh coffee grounds in the nose - fresh roasted coffee smells.. incredible. first time i had this joey poured it at the CCB tasting room for me and my insanely hungover friends... did the trick. the cacao nibs are really understated... you gotta focus to pick em up... dont know if that’s good or bad - but either way it’s delicious.
Draft at Brass Tap Trinity. Pours a medium dark brown with a thin tan head. Intermittent lacing along the glass. Aroma has a ton of ground coffee with hints of dark roasted chocolate. Tap during Hunahpu day 2012. Nose is straight up coffee. I couldn’t get any chocolate out of the mix. The body was a dark, dark brown. Almost black with a head that died quickly. Almost no lacing either. Taste is, again, straight up coffee. A touch of chocolate could be discerned but It’s way overpowered to me. It tastes like the regular cubano espresso in my opinion. The body is a very dirty brown with a light frothy head. The aroma is like that of an iced black coffee with dark chocolate in the mix. While a tad nutty, the coffee is apparent and takes over what little hops you taste almost completely. Not bad - a must try for the avid coffee/beer drinker.

Another great use of the Maduro base. This one was better than the Cuban Espresso version. aroma and taste had some amazing coffee/espresso blends with a more lactic/chocolate use of the mocha/cacao nibs that balanced out the bitterness that the espresso/coffee usually gives. The basis for the Mocha Cubano is Cigar City’s Maduro Brown Ale which is aged on a massive amount of Cuban espresso and Peruvian cacao nibs. The end result poured from my growler (thanks Jason) into my glass with rich browns, mahogany, and garnet highlights. His puffy head is coffee-stained while lace decorates what she can before the nose steps in and takes control. Chocolate covered coffee beans of the richest Cuban variety meet baker’s chocolate, coffee powder, and mocha atop a river of charred wood and burnt melba toast. Dry and brisk, his nose exudes toasted espresso and chocolate delights. My first quaff is simply beautiful; medium in weight with a silky, frothy mouthfeel. Ever frothed milk? That is how she feels, except make that milk of the finest mocha café-au-lait espresso variety and all is well with my world. Light in the front, her flavors really shine in the middle before finishing with a long lingering presence of chocolate covered roasted espresso beans. The top of my tongue is beyond dry, creating a never ending thirst for more Mocha Cubano which I am more than pleased to oblige. Vanilla root weaves in and out while her burnt espresso goes on and on. More refreshing than coffee, what she lacked in overall complexity was more than made up for in rich Cuban coffee bean perfection.

I need the Mocha Cubano from Cigar City Brewing in my fridge on a very regular basis, but until it is brewed and bottled for regular consumption I’ll keep waiting. In the meantime, I hear the coffee percolating which means it is time to get the day rolling.
32 oz. growler from my Secret Santa- thanks, Santa! Pours a cloudy brown with tons of visible carbonation and a dissipating beige head. Aroma of coffee grounds, vanilla, tobacco, and dust. Flavor is also big on the coffee, too much so, with caramel, tobacco, nuts, and wood. Seems like it was a little oxidized. I initially didn’t like this one at all because of the huge coffee content, but it did grow on me a bit. Aroma is almost all coffee grinds with hints of vanilla, and that’s about it.
Pour is light brown with whisps of white head.
Taste is astringent coffee grinds, some sweetness, and a hint of vanilla.
Finish is light coffee grinds and some sweetness and a touch of astringency.
The beer is dominated by coffee and almost nothing is left resembling beer on this one. Ugh.
