COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
High gravity black ale brewed with Ty Ty honey, copious amounts of hops and aged on toasted Spanish Cedar. Part 2 of a 4 beer collaboration between Cigar City, Hill Farmstead, and Grassroots. A note from Joey Redner: "The beers are basically black IPA’s brewed with lots of Citra, Mt. Rainier and Simcoe along with Ty Ty honey from North Florida aged on medium toast Spanish Cedar. There are different hop additions in the Hill Farmstead/Grassroots version (Or) and the 2-row base malt in the CCB version (Either) is replaced with Pilsner malt in the Vermont/Denmark version (Or). There are also some process differences which is one of the purposes of a collaboration; allowing breweries to learn from each other. The goal was to make two beers that were alike, but slightly different due to preferences in regional approach and access to ingredients. The four beers in this collaborative series will be named: Either, Or, Neither and Nor. Either and Or will release first and the other two will follow. Both Either and Or were brewed at CCB, but Neither and Nor will be brewed as single batches in both Vermont and Denmark.

UPDATED: DEC 17, 2013 Bottle. Extremely dark and viscous pour with a brown head. Big nose of oak, roast, honey, and resin hop. Taste is similar, palate is full. Spectacular brew!

from Erzboerschof - black beer with no head retention; the nose is woody and piney; aroma of black chocolate and honey; pretty roasted; full-bodied and very tasty; some astringency, hugely bitter, pretty dry and long hoppy, chocolatey and woody finish - huge stuff !

"aroma falls just a hair short of it’c cousin Either, but the overall impact abd flavor are bettter. the cedar is not so strong in the finish, but evenly eveident throughout, and the complexity is the beers strongest point. licorice, honey, chocolate, roasted malt, hops, cigar...not as sweet as the other. VERY nice."

On tap at Blind Tiger with Joey Redner. Did the Either, Or side by side. Pours a black caramel colored head. Has an aroma of citrus and caramel. Roasty citrus taste with more roast than the Either. A nice creamy mouthfeel. Tasty brew.

Pitch black with a tan head. Smoky black malt, molasses, cedar and blackberries. Medium to full bodied, silky smooth. The cedar hits you right away and gives way to roasty bitterness, coco and piney hops. Long lingering finish of pine and cedar. Best Black IPA I’ve ever had, Cigar City has done it again.

Black pour, small tan head. Aroma holds lots of citrus and grassy hop, along with notes of grapefruit; malt profile goes to the background. Also some hints of nectar fruit on the nose. Flavor holds awesome nectarine and pink grapefruit, along with awesome floral and perfume hop. Palate is light but so tasty. Definitely preferred over the Either.

Pours black (dark brown in the right light). One finger head. Some lace. Aroma is sweet, sweet, citrusy, pineapple hops. So fruity. So unexpected given the appearance. No pungent aroma, just tropical fruity. Aroma and appearance really counter my expectations of both. I’ve had black ipa’s, but this one presents a much cleaner hop aroma than others. Taste follows the aroma. Big, sweet, juicy hops. Wonderful. The hops are followed by a mild, malt sweetness. No roast flavors but more of a lightly sweet molasses or brown sugar and caramel. Very light and toned down malt flavor, which provides a nice complement to the juicy hops. Excellent beer.

Countbeer (6591) - Best of E-Town mit 2 Brauhausen, NETHERLANDS - FEB 7, 2011
Bottle: thanks to Joes for sharing: Small brown head on top of black beer with a red shine. Smell more hop than the Either (CCB), flowers, fruit and grapefruit. Taste hop, flower, bitter, fruit, grapefruit, liquorice. Grassy aftertaste. Low to medium carbo, medium to full body and tingly mouthfeel.
