McGrath’s Irish Red is named in honour of the ’Mighty’ Master McGrath, the greatest greyhound to have ever raced and who won the hare coursing Waterloo Cup 3 times in 1868, 1869 and 1871. Owned by the 2nd Baron, Lord Lurgan of Lurgan, Co Armagh Master McGrath became the town’s most famous sporting hero being renowned both nationally and internationally. During his racing career he was defeated only once in 37 course meetings. A medium bodied traditional ale, combining the caramel sweetness of the malts with toasted biscuit notes, balanced carefully by the earthy hops, finishing slightly dry but smooth on the palate. To be savoured on its own is a must...however it can equally be enjoyed when paired with meat or game dishes.

Faint nose (dried fruit / apricot / parsley / barbecue?). Too fizzy though.

500ml bottle from Winemark, Enniskillen (£2.59):
This one was a solid, if slightly uninteresting, Irish red ale that was fairly traditional in style with little variation from the norm. There was a nice balance to proceedings but I felt it could have been a little more pronounced with the smell & a few flavours more difficult to detect than I’d have liked at times. It was an easy beer to drink but it’s not really one worth seeking out, it was all pretty average if I’m honest.

Bottle purchased in Derry, shared with Linh and Scarlett in Donegal, Ireland - July 2015. Pours a deep red body with thin white lacing. Aroma is light caramel toffee. Mouthfeel is light bodied with notes of light caramel, toffee, soft malt and light dark fruits.

Beer5000 (6483) - Kristiansand, NORWAY - JUN 17, 2015
500 ml bottle. Clear amber body with a light, but lacing off-white head. Aroma is mild malt and hardly not much more. Flavor is sweetish rather dark malt with some kind of bitterness, not any fresh hops in the flavor. Medium body and moderate aftertaste. Drinkable but rather boring.

vinivini (2385) - Gomel, BELARUS - JUN 2, 2015
Copper liquid, minimal head. Caramely aroma with a little grassy hop note. Light body. Thin & watery. Sweetish taste of caramel. The palate fails definitely.

0.5 l bottle from K-Supermarket at Lohja, Finland. Red amber colour. Taste has some hops and malts, but overall a bit too much on the light or watery side for my taste.
