McGrath’s Irish Red is named in honour of the ’Mighty’ Master McGrath, the greatest greyhound to have ever raced and who won the hare coursing Waterloo Cup 3 times in 1868, 1869 and 1871. Owned by the 2nd Baron, Lord Lurgan of Lurgan, Co Armagh Master McGrath became the town’s most famous sporting hero being renowned both nationally and internationally. During his racing career he was defeated only once in 37 course meetings. A medium bodied traditional ale, combining the caramel sweetness of the malts with toasted biscuit notes, balanced carefully by the earthy hops, finishing slightly dry but smooth on the palate. To be savoured on its own is a must...however it can equally be enjoyed when paired with meat or game dishes.

Bottled. An amber beer with a beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and metallic hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of metallic hops, caramel, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.

CloakedDagger (2440) - - JUN 8, 2014
Bottle 50 cl. Pours a clear amber with a smallish, off-white head. Rustic, nutty aroma with some greasy, British hops. Light body, lowish carbonation, some caramel and nuts, slightly metallic with a decent hop dose in the finish. Fairly straight for what it is. 080614

0.5 l bottle, thanks hanniku! Reddish amber color. Fairly fruity and berryish aroma with caramel, pine resin and toffee. Resiny, caramelly and minerally taste with toffee and bitter burnt caramel. Lots of caramel which is not my favourite taste.

McNeillR (2313) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - FEB 12, 2014
Firm clear amber, simple contrasting bubbly wee white head. Nervy malt, easy sweetness and lightly soily nose. Straightforward stuff here - simple caramel sweetness doesn’t mask a dry tang although some listless hops. Decent carbonation and a clean dry finish. metallic and lightly bitter.

Bottle, The Vineyard, Belfast

stravale (3055) - Near Carrick-on-Shannon, IRELAND - FEB 11, 2014
Bottle from Supervalu, Longford [090212]
Copper red, white frothy head, some lacing
Aroma - slight roast, quite vegetal, cereal, quite odd
Taste of caramel malts, soft old red fruits, some toasted malts, bit vegetal
Palate - Medium carb, light to medium body, light sweet bitter. Finish as main flavour, slightly dry
Overall - Not a great Irish Red, rather over priced considering the quality. Very disappointed
