COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Affiliated with the Nectar Ales experience through shared origins at Humboldt Brewing Company, Hemp Ale is a one-of-a-kind brew that boasts an incredibly rich profile and unique herb-accented flavor that is attributable to the incorporation of hemp seeds into the brewing process. A wonderful brown ale full of complexity Hemp Ale is great with food or by itself. American hops create a perfect balance to the darker malts used in this brew. This brown ale is the Gold Medal winner for first place in its category at both the 1999 and 2000 California State Fair Craft Brewing Competitions.

Brown color with a quickly diminished head. After a re-pour the head was light tan for a second. Quite sweet from the start with a bit of toasted malt and brown sugar. Not much bitterness to back things up and has a worty/underattenuated flavor. Bleeeck! 2/11

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Janes Beer and Wine. Aroma is cherry and caramel. Appearance is beautiful clear, dark red with decent sparkle, 1/2 finger-width off-white fleeting head and no lacing. Taste is sweet dark fruits/cherry and caramel with late mild herbs. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture, average carbonation and sweet finish. Overall, perhaps picked up a slight contribution of the hemp in the taste but is not major. Is OK but nothing noteworthy.

Pours a medium brown color. Aromas of light chocolate, hops, and a touch of nut. Flavor has a smooth chocolate/coffee blend with a hint of nut, and a nice hop finish.

I dont know much about hemp. It used to be my summer job to exterminate wild hemp and noxious weeds from my late grandmothers farm. (Her name was Mary Jayne - you cant make that up). Hemps a hearty plant and a damned nuisance to remove. It smells sweet like oregano when fresh. Its absolutely foul when burned. (Sadly, given the dismally low THC content burning it was not a pleasant removal method at all.) Humboldt Brown had a bit of that sweet, herbal character I remembered, but other than a faint aroma the hemp doesnt really add much. In the end, this brown ale ends up being, well, a brown ale. Nothing remarkable but totally okay.

Not great, not bad. Would be great to drink a whole six pack around a fire. Probably would not get again.

Bottle. Poured a clear brown color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted malt and soft hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium roasted sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Soft brew.

Pretty good for a brown. Plenty of body, and a bit of Porter-like grit and character. Fruitiness in nose and taste, along with malty notes.
