UPDATED: JAN 16, 2014 Tap: jet black with a lasting, chunky cappuccino head that rests & sits quietly atop the dark brew; decent lacing left behind. Aroma is intensely roasted with notes of burnt coffee beans, mild booze, some dark fruit, light vanilla, & heavily charred, roasted malts. Taste has the same exceedingly roasty character with piles of burnt malts, rich liqueur, oily coffee beans, char, & ash. Back-end shows a faint bit of balancing sweetness with notes of creamy vanilla, brown sugar, & some dark prunes. No mistake, this is a roasty beast, & one of Clown Shoes’ best.

On tap at Barrels & Bottles. Black appearance with a lasting tan head. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, earthy bitter hops, light spices, molasses, licorice and alcohol. Full bodied with a smooth, creamy feel. Pretty complex, a nice sipper.

Pitch black color, brown and compact head, shortlasting, almost no head. Aromas to roasted coffee, burnt malts, liquor, hints of liquorice and maybe toffee. Exquisite, and overwhelming, mouthfeel, supported by a creamy, sometimes velvety, texture: notes to coffee, vanilla, liquorice, spices and some caramel. Very complex, deep, huge. An amazing and impressive imperial stout.

A very complex stout, this deep brown ale has a good, thick head, with plenty of staying power. The taste is intense, with strong malt flavors and equally strong hops. Balance is good, but the main thing is the strong, complex malt flavors. A good ale.

Near black pour with about a finger of brown head. Really interesting aroma on this one, missing the huge coffee and dark chocolate common with a typical RIS. I get a lot of dark fruit, cherries, dates, plums, some brown sugar, toffee, a little coffee and semi-sweet chocolate as well. Taste is slight bitterness (like chocolate) up front, then the dark fruit takes over, followed by toffee. It finishes with a slight presence of hops. The alcohol is definitely prevalent up that’s to be expected at 12.5. It’s not over the top though. This is really different than what I would expect from a RIS, while I’m missing the the huge roasted notes, I’m getting the big dark fruit. It almost reminds me of a really big baltic porter. I’m curious to see this with a few years of age on it. Whatever is going on, I have to say I’m digging it and it’s another great release from Clown Shoes.

FROM NOTES: August 10, ’12. Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a Spiegeau tulip. A: Chocolate front with a heavy roasted coffee and malt aromas. Booze aroma also detected. A: Pours pitch black with two-fingers of tan head that recedes slowly to a thin film atop the beer. Excellent retention. T: Follows the nose closely with strong flavors of chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, and some dark fruit notes, with some mild hoppiness on the back-end and a hint of smokey-sweet dark milk chocolate, espresso beans, malts and a hint of booze. Considerable spiciness as it warms. P: Medium to heavy, rich but not overly so and perhaps a bit too carbonated. O: To be honest, this has more of a American Black Ale taste than a RIS, but i like this CONSIDERABLY more than the Clown Shoes Black IPA.

On tap at 10 East - I’m pretty sure this was my first shot at Clown Shoes. It was either this or the Chocolate Sombrero. The beer has a look that is pitch black, ruby edges when held up to the sun with a dark brown head. The aroma reminded me in some ways of SA’s Triple Bock with notes of soy, tons of roasted malt, alcohol, subtle smokiness and a little black licorice. Medium sweetnes left on the palate, massive roasted notes with some molasses, soy sauce and dark dried fruits. Seriously decadent beer."

Pours black, with a hint of dark red at the very bottom of the snifter when held up to the light. Tan head that dissipates to faint at the top and clings around the edges. Very roasty and toasty. Sweet start the evolves towards bitter malt around the end. Faint coffee? chocolate? Velvety mouthfeel. Good RIS for sure.

All these imp stouts look the same and most taste the same. This one smelled great! There is roasty and there is burnt. This one is so burnt and smokey it's hard to choke it down. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
