Bottle. Yes, this looks like a Russian Imperial Stout ... deep black with a reddish tinge, a thin tan overcast. The aroma is rife with sweet, bitter baking chocolate and alcohol. It drinks with a hint of fireplace smokiness asserting itself right up front. The roasted, bitter dark chocolate lingers in the back ground. Lots going on here, but doesnt quite come together with the artistry needed to carry so much color. Then again, the more I drink the better it gets. (#4709, 7/26/2012)

Bomber to snifter, the appearance was a black color with a fingers worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace to leave some light stringy lace. The aroma had some roast up front, and a light coffee bean to grounds somewhat coming about as it warmed. Light nuts, some dark chocolate and a little bit of earthy hop spice. The flavor leaned towards the roast most of the way through the beer but seemed to try and bring in the earthy hop spice in subtly. Aftertaste and finish was mainly roasty. The palate was medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, its a decent RIS, maybe again.

650 ml. with no date stamp evident on this "brew designed to improve with age". Seems like a major design flaw. Opaque ebony pour sustains a quarter inch disc of sugary foam. Smells of dark bread, char, soy, piquant green herb and a touch of smoke. Flavor is rich chocolate torte, soy, mocha, dates, charred wood, green herb and a bit of peppery citrus zest. Heavy body has smooth light-medium carbonation and a good balance for a huge dessert beer. 12.5% abv is largely absent.

If this one tasted half as good as it looks it would be something. Rich creamy pour with a massive head. Looks can be deceiving.

(22oz bomber 2012) deep espresso brown, fine tan bubbles. Nose is super roasty, molasses, deep brown sugar, hoppy and a bit oxidized. Taste of hoppy roasty stout, oxidized, kind of a mess of flavors in general.

From the 650 ml. bottle bottled 5/18/17. It pours nearly jet black, opaque, with a modest tan head. Big aroma of roasted dark malts, yeast, chocolate, and a low hop profile. No alcohol, but I am drinking this after 11 months so I expect it has mellowed. The body is medium to full and pretty smooth all around. The taste has the same roasted sweet dark malt character as the aroma suggests but it ends far more bitter than I expect. No booze in the taste. Despite the age of this beer it is still quite excellent.

This was an excellent beer, to my taste. Thick. Jet black with a nice brown head. Complex coffee and chocolate, with a strong (but not too strong) alcohol flavor. But not everyone can put it all together so that one element doesnt harsh out the others. This was a smooth, well balanced, complex, tasty beer, if you like Imperial Stouts. Outstanding!

Bottle. Colour...onyx with a thick tan head. Nose...hops, chocolate creme and date paste. Palate...kind of musty to start and then a heavy ashen flavour and feel. Loads of char ash, but then something like lavender and violet pops up. The mid palate is dry and heavy on dark Dutch chocolate. The finish is still ashen and quite dry. The 12.5% ABV is well hidden.

Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice and phenols. Pours a dark black color with a tan head. Oily feel, full bodied with a taste of licorice, espresso and phenols with a slightly bitter coffee finish.

Long-cupboarded big bottle bottled 22/02/13, $10.99 from San Jose Cask NFlask, CA. Tar pour with an evil Manila foam retreating to the edges of the tulip. Initial whiskey, burnt wood, ink and peppermint moving into sweeter lurking Neopolitan ice cream tones flecked with discreet US hop, smoked single malt, blackened Sugar Puffs. Sticky on the lips but easy to put down at 12.5%. Whiffs of fruit buns, raisiny high cocoa, peaty malt, Twiglets, mint, jerky and incense. Its a fine stout, if a little sticky and thin, but not worthy of the ceremonial 8K.

Bottle, 2015 vintage aged about a year. Dark dark brown pour with a smallish tan head. Aroma is big time roast with dark chocolate and a little floral hop bite. Strong flavor is roast, dark cocoa, and some ash. Bittersweet tail.
