12oz bottle from Ken. Rating #100. Dark black pour with a tan head. Nice aroma, sweet and roasty with just a bit of hops. Big bitter roast, a light burnt quality to it and datk chocolate. Aroma was much better than the flavor, but it was real nice overall. (2113)

Pours, get ready, black with a tan head. Malty aroma with some coffee and chocolate. Flavor has the chocolate and coffee with smoky burnt wood. Bitter finish.

12 oz. bottle from my Secret Santa- thanks, Santa! Pours a deep, dark coffee brown, near black, with a finger of tan head that stays for a long time. Aroma of cocoa, burnt leaves, earth, toasted sugar, and some citrus peel. Flavor of super bitter dark chocolate, roasted malts, earth, and significant hop bitterness. Medium-bodied, with a bitter, roasty mouthfeel and medium soft carbonation. I’d probably like it a bit more if it had some other characteristics that came through besides an overall bitterness. But it’s not bad.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours a very dark brown with an active head of tan foam. Lots of roasted malt, some chocolate, and dirt. A bit thick on the tongue at first, but an abundance of carbonation lightens things up. Lots of roasted bitterness with a bit of pine, burnt, resin, and earth notes. The burnt and bitter notes seem to rule the roost here. Aggressive, but tasty.

The aroma is very hoppy and toasted with grassy and pine hops. There is both citrus and coffee here. The appearance is dark brown with a thin head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall an interesting beer but to astringent.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours an opaque black with a dense and frothy shaving foam style beige head. Cocoa dominates the nose. Medium body, plenty of bitter chocolate, subdued roast, while the hops don’t appear all that distainct - other than bitter. Appears mostly like a bitter Porter. 311211

Bottle. Black in color with a medium tan head. The nose is grassy, a bit of pepper some roasted malts. The taste is of roasted flavors, some coffee. Hoppy dry finish. The palate is light/medium, the finish a bit watery. The carbonation active. Overall, an inoffensive black IPA. Nicely made, though boring.

3.6
Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - DEC 29, 2011
12oz bottle. Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma has lots of oranges up front with some florals and a moderate pine with some resins. Fairly sweet caramel behind the oranges with some grapefruits, a touch of roast, and a good amount of chocolate. Flavor is heavier pines with some resins and earth up front, but a good amount of malts to balance. Chocolate, caramel, and some bread keep this fairly smooth up front before the orange/grapefruit citrus pines and slightly burnt roast cuts the chocolate sweetness. Finishes pretty dry and bitter with some resiny pines and earth, roasts, citrus, and some chocolate. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, not a bad Black IPA. Lots of piney oranges and grapefruits with some resins and a nice earth balanced well with a solid chocolate malt and dry roast. Easy drinking and tasty.
