Lube? Hey, get your mind out of the gutter! Social lubrication, people coming together to unwind, is what we are talking about. This American Black Ale has a dark body, medium bitterness, balanced with West Coast hops and sweet orange peel.

12oz bottle pours a nice looking mahogany with semi loose mocha head. The aroma offers up dark roasted coffee , dark roasted malts and chocolate as well as spicy and earthy hops in the background. The taste jumps at you all at once with a rolling and twisting mix of dark roasted coffee, spicy hops, resiny bitter pine hops, some chocolate and dark roasted to burnt malts. As the taste goes to midway and then toward the finish the highly roasted to brunt malts take over the flavor leaving timid levels of spicy and resiny hops and coffee behind mumbling to themselves in the corner. Nice stuff.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2011 New 4 pack Black IPA, 8 dollars, yes please. Pours a solid black with a frothy creamy khaki head that sticks around forever a leaves lots of sticky lace. Smell is piney and citrusy with hints of garlic and a solid roasted grain backbone. Smells like a hoppy porter, but these two style lines are so blurry who the hell knows. Taste is roasted coffee with a mineral edge. Pine and citrus come out to cut through the roast and almost succeed. Mineral earthy roasty finish lingers after every sip. Moderate carbonation and body with a resinous acridic mouthfeel. Decent black IPA but really straddling the porter line with this one. I’m a bit disappointed that the artwork didn’t make it onto the 12oz bottle label, oh well.

From a bottle poured a brown color with a fair amount of head. Toastedd malty flavor with a lingering finish.

This is the racist beer, right? Pours a deep black with a big, thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roast, mild happiness. Flavor had a big bitterness component, mild chocolate and roast. Some touches of coffee. Lightish bodied, very smooth mouthfeel, bitterness showcases itself in the finish. Pretty interesting beer. At least, very solid offering from Clown Shoes.

The nose has a good balance of hop and malt. The first taste shows a dark malt bitterness along with the hop flavor. The palate is a little thin. Smooth dry finish. This will work as a session beer for me. Very astringent, because of the dark roasted malts and hops. Love the picture, and not offended by it.

Black with good, foamy, cappuccino head / Modest nose of roast barley and citrus / Light body, high carbonation, watery, with otherwise good balance / Flavors of dark roast coffee, unsweetened chocolate, orange, and bubblegum / More punch to the body and this could be very good.

12oz Bottle, purchased at Wakefield Liquors - Wakefield, RI. Having a hard time coming to a conclusion with this beer. I don’t understand the use of orange peel and see it as muddying the flavor profile. The blackness is almost too ashy and the hops are a clean, minty bitterness, as opposed to a floral, fragrant punch I would expect from most West Coast hops. This feels like an amped-up Schwarzbier with some more hops, which pretty well describes a Black IPA.

Pours black into a snifter. Pancake head with good retention leaves spider lacing. Earthy resin aromas. Dry, with sweet dark caramel and mocha before turning to a sour resin finish.

So i was just looking for a simple nice beer to enjoy tonight and this well out did my expectations. Bomber poured into a pint glass. deep black color with some brown edges in the light. Light tan one finger head. The aroma is a pine and brown sugar. I think of it as molasses spice cake with burnt edges. A lovely sweet smell. The taste is a little roasted malt with bitterness and some oily orange zest just kicking in at the end. Taste fades fast. Refreshing for such an aromatic and flavorful beer. very slight linger of bitter in the finish. Best clown shoes beer I have had.
