COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
California, be on the lookout for our special, tequila barrel aged version of Chocolate Sombrero (Tequila Sombrero!) this December/January. We worked with our friends at Wine Warehouse to produce this CA exclusive! We asked our resident Luchador to acquire some tequila barrels, but there was a miscommunication and he robbed the town of Tequila Mexico of all their tequila bottles. Luckily, we found some tequila barrels our selves and brewed a batch of Chocolate Sombrero (complete with vanilla, cinnamon and ancho chiles) to age in them for 10 months. The pilfered liquor was promptly returned (sure it was). Salud!

It pours dark brown with a brown head. It has chocolate flavors with roast and some floral elements. There is a bit of a fruity element to it with a slight tequila element.

22 oz bottle. The beer is wall to wall black. The head is brown and very small, just a few bubbles after a minute. The aroma is chocolate, caramel and tequila fruitiness. Mild oak. Nice mix of chocolatiness but it could be a bit stronger. Lots of caramel. Some booziness is apparent. It’s pretty sweet. Caramel, roast and tequila, mostly. Again, light, fruity tequila flavor with medium oak. Some roast and oak bitterness in the finish. Not enough of the chocolate comes through from the aroma. Big caramel middle. There’s some good body to the beer, but a bit much alcohol burn - not sure if it’s from the barrel or the beer. Finishes a touch thin, somehow. I like tequila well enough, but I’m not a fan of many tequila barrel-aged stouts, so far. I think it’s one of the harder types of spirit barrel aging to get right, at least for my taste.

Bottle. Pours black. Aroma and taste are lots of chocolate, tequila, and some spices.

Bottle from Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours dark brown with a thick attractive beige head and a fruit and toffee aroma. There is a hearty chocolate malt flavor with some interesting spices and a moderately peppery tequila finish . There is a warm alcohol trail that stays on the palate.

Bomber from Corti Bros. Pours very dark brown with a dark tan head. Aroma of tequila, chocolate and notes of chiles. Near full bodied at least. Flavor is chocolate, chiles, tequila, spice notes. Getting a spice burn on my tongue edges. Heat in the gullet. Finishes less than dry, but it works out as chocolate tequila drink. Which means I can’t really describe it well, but it is a very nice, and reasonably complex ale.
