Inspired by brewers back in the 1800′s to win over the Russian Czar, this is the king of the stout family of beers. Black Widow was affectionately named after one of the most feared spiders in the West, boasting a ridiculously high alcohol content and plenty of malt character. She is moderately carbonated with huge roasted, chocolate and burnt malt flavors with a dry finish. Suggestions of dark fruit and flavors of higher alcohols dominate the front and we aggressively hop this massive brew to provide balance. Formulated with a UK Maris Otter malt base and five different dark roasted malts, we feed the Black widow with additions of 95% Cacao chocolate, Molasses, Vermont Maple Syrup and Killer Bee Honey after the fermentation has begun to further her deep complex warmth, balanced out by resinous high alpha hops. To subtle the massive alcoholic strength we lay her down in Bourbon barrels until the warming character marries with the notes of vanilla, caramel, and Bourbon. Black Widow pours pitch black with a beige colored one-finger creamy head that seems to retain forever and sticks to the sides as it settles. Aromatics of melted chocolate are abound with toffee and caramel taffy, some underlying mocha coffee, subtle roasted malt note with a bit of alcohol. Chocolate definitely shines overall, the chocolate flavors follow the aroma with huge bitter-sweet dark chocolate, some dark fruity notes chime in around mid-palate with fig/date, coffee flavors arise near the end with a sweet and roast malt finish. With a bit more chocolate on the linger look for a full body and moderate carbonation, a chewy mouth feel with a crisp finish. Alcoholic warmth is evident in the finish and after the very first sip you will be warned that She bites back.

UPDATED: JAN 9, 2018 Very unique beer. Beautiful pour from nitro tap at CVB. smells strongly of bourbon. Very high abv, enough to make you feel warm inside. Great beer but couldn't drink more than four ounces because it is so strong.

kraddel (9436) - Antwerp, BELGIUM - JAN 9, 2018
Pours black. No real head. Smell is bourbon, oak, roasty grains. Taste is full, very thick, boozy, bourbon, oak, sharp bitterness, both from malts, and (mostly) from roastyness. thick body. low carbo. rather boozy, but hey, at this ABV? Very nice stout indeed.

Davros (3362) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - DEC 27, 2017
Pours black with a tan head. Nose shows chocolate, liquorice, booze and hazelnut. As intense as you would expect. Flavours include hot booze, bready malt, chocolate. A fair bit of a solvent note. For a 20.4% abv beer this does reasonably well at keeping the booze balanced with the other flavours... but just not quite there!

LCI. Uit de fles geschonken (= 2015 version). Dikke, vette BA imp stout, rokerig, mooie bourbon smaak en dito gedroogd fruit. Heerlijke afdronk. One of the better beers I had!

Pitch black pour with a dark beige head that settles to a ring of foam along the edge of the glass. The nose is offers really intense licorice and coffee. Intense melted chocolate too. Bourbon booze coming through as well. The taste is hugely intense. Big concentrated flavours. Roasted malt. Dark cocolate and boozy raisins. Aftertaste is slightly bitter and chocolaty. Huge beer. Nice aroma and flavour but drinkability is low here...

Aroma is super boozy with intense chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and coconut notes. Pours a black color with tan head. Flavor matches the aroma; chocolatey, boozy intensity with vanilla, caramel, and coconut. Perhaps the biggest tasting Imperial Stout Ive had. Notes: On at GABF, Aged in Four Roses Barrels

Amazing. A lot of alcoohol, aged in bourbon barrel, with special flavours... One of the beast beers I’ve already tried!!!

Taster, on tap at the brewery. On nitro. Big rich Russian imperial stout - very smooth, the nitro helps that. Medium body - not thick like I was expecting. Warming but not boozy - alcohol very well managed. Low IBUs, sweet but not too sweet. intense flavours - very nice.

Sampled at GABF 2015. Had to wait a couple hours for them to pour this one it was worth the wait. Glad I went back to the booth for this one In the tasting glass was pitch black with a small lid of tan foam. Chocolate, anise, and dark fruit in flavor. Very full body. Creamy mouth feel. Flavor is rich chocolate malts and licorice. Ripe fruit. Finish is alcoholic and bitter. Super beer/
