Batch 1 (June 2010): 7-months in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels
2012 Release - Aged 11 months in Blantons Barrels.

As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt.

Draft at Brewvival. Completely black, thick brown head. Aroma of vanilla, burnt espresso, chocolate. Taste is very roasty with brandy and vanilla, but not boozy at all. Very nice stuff.

UPDATED: NOV 22, 2012 2010 vintage. 22 oz. bottle, sent from CooperEllis (thanks a lot, John), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of the buffalo trace barrels upfront, tar and charcoal. Flavour brings out the barrels upfront without overburdening the palate, with some smoked malt, charcoal and almost a sour tang to it, likely from the barrels - not much actual bourbon, just the presence of some sort of barrel aging. A slight improvement from the original, as to increase the complexity. But still sub-par for the style.

A: The pour is essentially black in color with a thin layer of dark khaki head. S: Whiskey and vanilla come through but the intense roastiness of the base beer is also really quite apparent. There is a bit of dark chocolate and coffee on the aroma as well. A touch of molasses and char. T: Pretty much the same story on the palate. Whiskey flavor and vanilla with charred oak. Lots of roasted malts with some molasses and toffee sweetness as well as dark chocolate notes. M: The body is certainly a bit thin on this beer, but the carbonation and mouthfeel are solid. O: The barrel aging helps to take away some of the intense roast character, but its not an amazing beer.

Bottle. Pours black with off white head. Nose/taste of bourbon, oak, vanilla, roasted chocolate malt, lightly smoked black malt and bitter coffee. Medium body. Finishes with a sweet bourbon/oaky roasted chocolate malt.

Bottle [2012 edition] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized quickly diminishing dark brown head. Aroma is malts, bourbon, bourbon sweetness, vanilla. Lovely. Flavor is dark malts, soft roast, loads of bourbon, vanilla, pretty sweet bourbon flavor flowing into chocolate and light mocha before ending with a moderate malt-slight booze bitter finish. Medium body, oily and lightly sticky texture, soft carbonation. Good beer for sure, but I was so blown away (4.7) by the original that perhaps my expectations were a little too high. Thoroughly enjoyed it though.

Bottle thanks to Eric. Pours a very dark brown with no head. The aroma is wood and chocolate. Thin mouthfeel with strong roast, wood, dark chocolate, very good.

It has a good roasted malt base but it also has an overbearing sweetness that lingers.

"a little light on the body for an impy stout, but smooth, and otherwise pretty nice. the jack comes through fairly strong in the aroma and especially the aftertaste, but not overdone. im not a huge JD fan (i liked the JD/Buffalo Trace one better) but this was done well."

Growler This beer rocks! Pours pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Decent retention. The aroma offers dark mocha, vanilla, bourbon, coconut and a trace of toasted oak. Full-bodied and silky with solid carbonation. The flavor is of black malt, warming bourbon, sweet dark chocolate, singed caramel and a whisper of pouch tobacco. Lengthy, burnt, mildly boozy finish hop, black malt and ethanol bitterness hangs out a good while after each sip. World class treatment of a really good, but not great beer. Growler courtesy of Elliesbrown. Thanks Zack!
