One of the best RIS aromas ever. Delicate whiskey, vanilla, oak, and a touch of chocolate. Classic RIS pitch black pour, with a brown head that is slightly darker than the regular Blackbeerd. Flavor is extremely balanced. The bourbon enhances but doesn’t overpower. Oak and vanilla mixed with bittersweet chocolate followed by a slight bourbon finish. Regular Blackbeerd is a tad thin for the style and this is no different. It makes the drinkability superb on a stout such as this however. World class. This one absolutely trounces the regular version. Pretty much jet black with dark tan head. Some small bits of light make it through.
The smell is wonderful. Chocolately with a hint of whiskey. Not overpowering.
The taste is more of the same. The barrel aging brings out thick chocolate taste and you get a smooth but definite whiskey aftertaste. Not overpowing at all, it just peaks through the traditional RIS aftertaste.

courtesy of brewedawakening, thank you so much! wow, is this a treat! i love the way jd barrels play on a beer, just divine. this stuff pours very think black, very oily and dense, with a slow rising dark brown head that has good retention and excellent lacing and spotting. smells like chocolate milk, totally awesome, almost like a st stout. the taste is to match, just awesome. sweet, creamy, thick, lightly barreled, but just enough to make itself known, especially comes through nicely in the finish and after taste. the smokey peaty original beer is still there, but the bitterness is balanced so beautifully by the sweet marshmallows, chocolate milk and jd. the body is top notch, thick and full, nothing unpleasant about it. excellent beer, i really enjoyed this one. daknole (11048) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - APR 10, 2009
Bottle from Matt. Thanks bro. HELL YES ON THIS BEER! Black pour with a good little brown head. Aroma is really great. Faints hints of bourbon mixed with chocolate, oak, roast, vanilla and molasses. Flavor has subtle bourbon tones allowing for the chocolate, fruit, molasses, vanilla, and light hops to shine. Wonderful beer. I fell very lucky to drink one of the only 96 bottles released!

Pours pitch-black and super-thick, like a motor-oil milkshake. The smell shows unmistakable bourbon and oak, yet also keeps the mocha soul of the original intact. Bittersweet and boozy yet smooth and mellow, rolling layers of flavor keep sweeping across your tongue. The finish drips with Sour Mash Whisky, but only the smoothest, top-shelf bottle you can find. Appearance: Pours a conspicuously black body with a foamy, tan-colored head.
Smell: Rich, inviting nose swimming in roast malts and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey along with all of the anticipated, substantial notes you would come to expect from each.
Taste: Dessertlike blend of malt and barrel-imparted flavors: roast, chocolate, brown sugar, heavy cream simmered with vanilla beans, molasses, and anise. There’s a rich, indulgent sweetness all the while, regardless of any feeble attempts made by a light, roasted bitterness midway. Some woody oak character shining through. Slight alcohol warmth on the roasty, creamy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Altogether velvety mouthfeel.

Dark brown. Not much head. Chocolatey, rich slightly fudgey and smooth aroma with only a the slightest hint of barrel. Rich, soft body is ultra smooth. Just a hint of barrel taste, but the wood provides significant roundness to the beer in the finish. Subtle vanilla late lends this beer a dessert quality that other BA impys would envy. Gorgeous stuff.
