Jack Daniels barrel-aged version of the original Blackbeerd. Released 3/09, in black wax-topped bottles. Total bottle release: 96. As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt. Hold on to yer booty, a dark stouts a brewin’. (9.3% abv) Seasonal-winter. And yes, this IS a lighter bodied stout-easier drinkin’ in the not so cold south. Ingredients: Two-row barley*, Black, Caraffa*, Roasted barley*, Smoked, Oats* and Extra Special* malts, Magnum and Palisades hops, ale yeast and filtered water.

Bottle, THANK YOU SO MUCH DAKNOLE! Thick viscous black, gorgeous. As it warms the bourbon aromas emerge with power. Gorgeous bouquet with resplendent asphalt notes. Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth. Lovely flavors. Great sweetness from licorice notes, great roastiness that borders on burnt. Nice tannic notes from the wood. Smooth and good!

Dark brown. Not much head. Chocolatey, rich slightly fudgey and smooth aroma with only a the slightest hint of barrel. Rich, soft body is ultra smooth. Just a hint of barrel taste, but the wood provides significant roundness to the beer in the finish. Subtle vanilla late lends this beer a dessert quality that other BA impys would envy. Gorgeous stuff.

great smell of a sugar cane field located somewhere near a pine forest. flavor is wonderfully mellow and balanced, almost impossible to describe. Vannila ish. Thank you Daknole.

Bottle from Matt. Thanks bro. HELL YES ON THIS BEER! Black pour with a good little brown head. Aroma is really great. Faints hints of bourbon mixed with chocolate, oak, roast, vanilla and molasses. Flavor has subtle bourbon tones allowing for the chocolate, fruit, molasses, vanilla, and light hops to shine. Wonderful beer. I fell very lucky to drink one of the only 96 bottles released!

UPDATED: APR 28, 2010 22oz bomber topped with black wax, courtesy of a super generous Carolina BA, poured into a tulip.

Pours dark chocolate brown out of the bottle and settles in black in the glass underneath a big tan head. The head recedes slowly and leaves good lacing.

The aroma is wonderfully balanced for a barrel-aged beer with the whiskey making its presence felt but with lots of sweet chocolate and lightly roasted dark malts.

The taste has the same balance as the aroma but does have a bit more of the whiskey presence especially in the finish where the alcohol burns after each sip. There is also licorice and plenty of sugary sweetness throughout which melds well with the boozy barrel character.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with decent carbonation ad certainly not too heavy on the palate.

This is leaps and bounds better than the original Blackbeerd for me as the barrel aging really brings out the best of the underlying beer by balancing the sweetness with the oak and whiskey.

Appearance: Pours a conspicuously black body with a foamy, tan-colored head.

Smell: Rich, inviting nose swimming in roast malts and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey along with all of the anticipated, substantial notes you would come to expect from each.

Taste: Dessertlike blend of malt and barrel-imparted flavors: roast, chocolate, brown sugar, heavy cream simmered with vanilla beans, molasses, and anise. There’s a rich, indulgent sweetness all the while, regardless of any feeble attempts made by a light, roasted bitterness midway. Some woody oak character shining through. Slight alcohol warmth on the roasty, creamy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Altogether velvety mouthfeel.

Drinkability: Highly recommended. I was just hoping for a good whiskey barrel-aged Imperial Stout. And it was a great whiskey barrel-aged Imperial Stout! It’s clear Coast cares about my happiness.

Pours a nearly opaque oily black with a clingy-lacing spotty light tan head. Aroma of sweet toasty dark caramel and milk chocolate with some vanilla and bourbon oak. Starts with average fullness for the style with sweet dark caramely and chocolate flavors along with some dark fruity character before a smoother slightly warming finish. A pretty good barrel-aged imperial stout, but could use a little more fullness.
